[Bug]* SN8 Crashes When Closing Via File > Exit A Second Viewer Window With Info Window Open

When two viewer windows are opened, and both have INFO windows open, then closing the second viewer window causes SN8P to crash.  In the screen shot below, the INFO window for Sirius was opened from the first viewer and the INFO window for Nihal was opened from the second one.

    Hi Ron,

I do not find that the app crashes if the second viewer is closed via the window's [X] button.  I do find the app crashes if the second viewer is closed via File > Exit.

    Please confirm.

    Thanks!

Pretty sure the app is operating properly. File > Exit is meant to close all windows and quit the app. If I use the [X] button on any individual window, it closes that and only that one. Not seeing any relation to the Info window being open.

Yes, you're right Dave, that is expected behaviour.

    Thanks!

    Hi Keiron, Dave,

Here's another crash report coming your way.  I found that SN8P operates correctly in a simple test just opening the two viewers and two info windows and then closing the second viewer.  It will crash after if you're using other apps at the same time and flipping between windows.

    Hi Ron,

On the crash report choose "What does this report contain?"

Please email the contents of the report to me at ksmith at simcur.com

    Thanks!

I think I've found a way to reproduce the crash.  Open two viewers.  Open an INFO window for the sun in the second viewer window (see the first snapshot below).  Click on the first viewer window, then on the INFO window to put the focus on it (see the second snapshot below) .  Now try closing the second viewer window by clicking on the (X).   SN8P is crashing every time on my system.

This still occurs with 8.0.2.  Will send the latest dump to Keiron.

Now 8.0.2 can't be restarted after the crash.  It has to be ended via task manager.

    Hi Keiron,

It's still happening the way I described.  Will resend the dump to you.

So, your SN8 is non-operational at this time, does not run at all?

SN8P is running, but after that one crash, I couldn't get it to restart until I signed out from windows and signed back in. That may have been the result of crashing it many times while investigating various scenarios.  Anyway, I'll send you a screen capture and a dump I just did a few minutes ago.

    Hi Keiron,

Thank you for working on this issue.

I confirm Ron's crash observation for windows SN8pp 8.0.2 & this 'issue' ranks for me as "disruptive": it is a significant disruption to one of my common workflow uses of Starry Night because I have to redo all my viewer layouts & advanced searches after the crash.  In other words this is a much bigger deal for me than a basic UI issue like 'drag & drop; not working in favorites.

I use multiple viewers & multiple info boxes to compare the nice double star 'descriptions' included for some of the multiple stars.  SN8pp has been regularly crashing & sending error reports when I am planning multiple star observations & this thread explains exactly why.

workaround: for now I will make sure to not close any viewer until I close all my info boxes.

likely related corollary issue: the info boxes windows are called/handled differently than the SN viewer windows: & they do NOT respect native windows 10 multitasking multiple desktops. In other words, when I switch windows desktops the infor boxes are always displayed no matter to which built in windows 10 multitasking desktop I switch.

    Hi Ron,

Thank you for identifying & describing this issue.

Also, RE: "Now 8.0.2 can't be restarted after the crash":

the 'leave shaders on' popup that opens after a crash may be getting stuck behind the SN loading logo splash window...this happens to me all the time...I use the very useful mini-tool "Alt-Drag" to move the splash screen out of the way to expose the shader dialogue popup so I can click "leave shaders on" and continue to load SN.

update: I am also seeing this same multi viewer crash with the "add image" (for DSOs)  dialogue open...I speculate this issue is generally related to the handling of this class of dialogue (LDialogClass).
