What Is The Best Starry Night/SkySafari Setup For Use With A Celestron C6-NGT + CG-5 Mount? (Answer: On macOS > Starry Night Pro 8 And/Or SkySafari 6 Pro + SkyFi 3; On iOS > SkySafari 6 Pro + SkyFi 3)

I am beginning the process of building my astronomy setup. I am researching the following questions I have a Celestron CG-5 with an Advanced GT Hand Control

  1. Can I use SkyWire or SkyFi with this telescope?
  2. I have bought SkySafari 6 Professional
  3. I am a Mac user. I use an iPhone XSMax, iPad Pro 12.9” Generation 3, MacBook Pro, and a Mac Desktop as well.

What is the best setup to use this telescope and hardware to get 21st century control of this telescope.

  1. What software?
  2. What solution from Starry Night?
  3. Are your platforms still being developed for current iOS and MacOS platforms?
  4. I don’t find a lot of details of current development?
  5. I am a technology buff so I would welcome the opportunity to test and do fresh reviews and how-tos for your solutions

Thanks in advance for your help and insights!

Congratulations on your rig, sounds like a nice setup.

SkySafari 6 Pro will work on all of your iOS and OSX platforms.  How you connect those devices to the mount makes no difference regardless if using SkyWire of SkyFi when using the scope while you're in attendance.  Using SkyFi is a more 21st century solution IMHO as long as you have a good WiFi connection to the scope and controlling device.

Your second set of questions is much more difficult to answer.  If you are just interested in controlling the scope for pointing than you have all you need with SkySafari 6 Pro.  If you are interested in remote control of the scope there are many forums on the subject.

I use Starry Night 7 Pro in addition to SkySafari 6 Pro since they are different types of programs used for different functions.  Both will control your scope.

I can't speak directly about the future development but my experience is that updates and new versions have a good track record.

I suggest you write directly to the Simulation Curriculum on their contact page https://simulationcurriculum.com/contact/contact.html to ask about beta testing etc.

    Hi David,

    • On macOS > Starry Night Pro 8 And/Or SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro + SkyFi 3
    • On iOS > SkySafari 6 Plus/Pro + SkyFi 3

These are the most streamlined plug + play wireless telescope control solutions for you.

Both Starry Night and SkySafari are under constant development.

    Enjoy!
