Orange Night Mode; See July Sky and Telescope Page 34

Hi Bill:

The July Sky and Telescope has a great article on a "Red Light Field Test". The test showed that orange works better for preserving night vision than red. A nice feature might be to select color for night mode. Two approaches:

Option 1. Simple setup selection between red and orange

Option 2. Default red. But a box to select color from a color palette.

iOS accessibility features enable you to triple-click the home button to go into a color mode. The color can be selected from a color palette. This is important even if you use the SkySafari Night Mode because SS can time out, and when you open your iPhone/iPad, the Home Screen will spoil your night vision if your phone/tablet isn't in color mode. For those who don't know how to do this, please see this article to explain how to set the color, and how to set up a triple-click shortcut to toggle this mode:

I've noticed that this iOS accessibility color mode will distort some of the SkySafari options when SkySafari is in regular color mode. But as soon as SS6 goes into night mode, the iOS color selection is superseded, and SS6 displays properly. So SkySafari is doing an excellent job in night mode.

Clear skies,

Rob

    Rob,

Thanks forth suggestion.  It is something I will consider.  The code that accomplishes night vision on iOS is fairly complex.  There are lots of hacks to make it work as well as it does.  I do not just use "red" but different shades of red in various places.  I would have to determine the comparable shades of orange.

    Hi Bill:

I can appreciate how complicated it is. When the iOS device is in Red for the accessibility mode, it messes up the display in SS6. But as soon as SS6 is put into night mode, the display is corrected.

I just wanted to make you aware of the S&T article for future consideration.

    Clear skies, Rob

Yes, when you use either the accessibility mode to make the screen red (or you put red film oft the screen) you much set SkySafari to night vision as well.  That is because the blue elements in SkySafari are totally invisible if only red light comes through.
