How To Connect SkySafari 6 Pro On iOS + SkyFi 3 + Celestron Evolution 8? (Answer: Read On!)

I am set up at the Grand Canyon Star Party and I last used my SkyFi III and Evolution 8 two years ago while here.  I thought I had connected the SkyFi III to the mount the same way I did 2 years ago.  I use a short USB cable to connect the Evolutin USB port to the power input to the SkyFi III to provide additional power to it.  I also use a short USB to mini(micro) USB cable to connect the SkyFi II to the USB port on the base of the StarSense hand controller.  I could not establish a connection.  Do I need a different cable?

I picked the SkyFi network in the iPAD WiFi settings and I configured the telescope in SkySafari PRO 6 appropriately.

    Hi MallinCamUSA!

The SkyFi 3 USB port is used to make a connection to the Celestron hand controller USB Mini port.

SkyFi 2 can not be used with Celestron USB hand controllers.

    1. Connect SkyFi 3 to Celestron hand controller USB Mini port.
    2. Align the Evolution scope using Celestron hand controller.
    3. In SkySafari make sure you are choosing ScopeType "Celestron SE"
    4. Connect

If you still need help please attach one or two photos that show the current mount, HC, SkyFi 3, cables, configurations and ports, etc.

    Thanks!

    Kerion,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I think that is the procedure I was using when I could not connect to Sky Safari on my iPhone.  I would have tried out the steps above last night, but clouds prevented observing last night at the Grand Canyon Star Party and tonight the skies will be worse.  So I won't be able to test the system until my next star party in Canada in late July.

    Thanks.

    Kerion,

Last night I connected the SkyFi 3 to the Celestron mout to obtin power from the mount to the power input on the SkyFi 3.

I aligned the Evolution mount using the StarSense module.

I then connected the USB port on the SkyFi 3 to USB mini port on the StarSense keypad.

    The mount immediately stopped tracking.444

I disconnected the two cables from the SkyFi unit to the mount (power and USB) and the mount failed to respond to keypad button pushes.

I had to power down the mount, and do another StarSense alignment.  The mount worked well after that.

Did I mess up by not having the USB cable connected to the keypad during the alignment?

If so, I will try again tonight to see if the order of connection makes a difference.

    Yours truly,

    Hi Jack,

Having the SkyFi 3 connected via Celestron USB hand controller prior to the alignment process should not make a difference.

Rebooting the mount might have fixed the issue - let me know how it goes tonight.

    Thanks!
