Can I Use Starry Night Pro 7 & SkySafari 6 Pro With Celestron SkyPortal WiFi Module? (Answer: Starry Night = No; SkySafari = Yes; Read On!)

I have NexStar 6se, Celestron SkyPortal wifi dongle and a MacBook Pro running the larest version of Mojave. I also have SN7 and SkySafari 6 Pro. When trying to control the scope from either software program i get error messages.

SN7 error message: "An error has occurred while trying to communicate to the scope. Ensure all cables .... etc etc

SkySafar 6 Pro error message: "SkySafari 6 Prp cant make a TCP/IP network connection to tge scope. Make sure you've joined its WiFi or Ethernet network.......etc

I have joined the network created by the SkyPortal and I can control the scope using my cell (Samsung Galaxy Note 5) and my Samsung Tab S2 tablet using the SkyPortal App. Do I need  driver for the Mac? Its a new 2019 model.

    Hi Robert,

In SkySafari 6 Pro - make sure you have selected SkySafari Telescope Settings > Scope Type > Celestron WiFi

In SN7 - you can not connect using Celestron WiFi; i.e. you can not use Celestron's SkyPortal WiFi module.  You will need to either use a wired USB connection from Macbook to Celestron hand controller, or using our SkyFi 3 WiFi hardware device.

For sure, you can make SS6Pro work.

    Thanks!

    Hi Keiron

Thanks for the response. I'm now able to control the scope from SS6 Pro.

I'll stop wasting time trying to use the Scope Control on SN7. Is it worth it to swap the SkyPortal for SkyFi 3?  I've had it for less than 2 weeks.

With Celestron WiFi you can align the scope using the app SkySafari.  If in the future you were to purchase Celestron's StarSense then that too could be aligned using the app SkySafari.

With SkyFi 3 you must align the scope using the hand controller first, then connect with the app SkySafari.  The same if you get StarSense.

If you want to use SkySafari and Starry Night to control your scope wirelessly, the it may be smart to switch from Celestron WiFi to SkyFi 3.

SkyFi 3 is rock solid.  Always works, always holds the signal, and has a long range.  Celestron WiFi has its advantages too.

Unfortunately, we do not have Celestron WiFi as an option for Starry Night telescope control.
