How To Search For All Comets In SkySafari 6 Pro? (Use The Planner, Read On!)

In previous versions of SkySafari all available comets were listed in Search / Comets.  This was helpful since we tend to go for fainter comets in the 12th - 15th magnitude range.

However, in SkySafari 6 Pro, only the "Brightest Comets" are available in Search. This is proving to be useless, as comet brightnesses fluctuate rapidly and currently visible comets are not available in the list. For example, Comet 2017 T2 PANSTARRS is presently very bright and visible, but is not included in the list.

How can I get all of the available comets back in the Search / Comets listing?

The complete database has around 3,500 comets and around 750,000 asteroids.  We decided there was no point in having a long list of faint comets in the Comets list.  It is now called "Brightest Comets" and has all comets with a visual magnitude brighter than 16.

You can still do an explicit search for any other comet.  If you really want to, you can use the Planner and search just for comets and get back all the comets in the DB.  Note that in iOS and Mac, the Planner is limited to finding 10,000 objects so you can see the entire asteroid database that way.

    Hi Keiron,

What is the Planner? Is this part of the app?

To go from 3,500 comets to 18 presently is quite a dramatic difference. Perhaps list the top 100 as a conpromise?

The trouble with Searching is that you have to be ultra precise with the naming convention, or you get nothing.
