[Scope Control]* Why Does SkySafari 6 Plus Send $$$ On Connection To Astro-Physics CP3 Controller?

When connecting SkySafari 6 Plus to a telescope via Bluetooth SkySafari is sending $$$ before the first valid telescope command.

This causes the Astro-Physics CP3 controller not to recognize the data sent after the $$$.  Data being sent is $$$:V# the :V# is valid and returns the firmware version.  Nothing is sent back and the connection fails.

Tried changing the telescope to Classic Meade LX200 and it works because nothing is expected back from the connect but SkySafari is still sending $$$.

What is $$$ for?  Did find some Bluetooth adapter will work but there is a delay between the $$$ and :V#.

    Bluetooth devices used are:
    Free2Move Uncord
    FireFly D24E
    Both work using other software.

    Mount is Astro-Physics 900GTO with CP3 controller firmware V2

    SkySafari version is 6.6.4.10 Plus

    Thanks for any help. I know of other people using SkySafari that have the same problem is Astro-Physics mounts. I changed the telescope to Meade LX200 Classic and don't have a problem, even though $$$ is still sent but not the :V# command following it. Also there is a slight delay between the sending of the $$$ and :GD# command for the Meade LX200 Classic.

    Sorry, William, this is not the log file I'm looking for.

    SkySafari Settings > Telescope Setup > Save Log File

    Save Log File - If turned on, SkySafari saves a log of its communication with the telescope on your mobile device. SkySafari creates a new log file every time you connect to the telescope. The log file records every command that SkySafari sends to the telescope, and every response from the telescope. The log file name contains the date and time you began the telescope session, for example:

    2014-01-31-12-34-56.txt

    Android users - the scope communication log is written to a folder named "SkySafari Plus" or "SkySafari Pro" at the top level of your SD card. Copy this file to your computer with a USB cable, or simply email it to yourself.

    1. Also - what OS are your running?
    2. What device/computer make and model?
    3. Please link me to the URL with any discussion about this same issue.

    It seems that if there is a delay between the $$$ and :V# the AP mount will recognize the :V#.

    Some bluetooth to serial adapters put a delay in some do not.  Since the log does not show the $$$ do you know where it is coming from?

    I found out if a # is sent after the $$$ it will work.  $$$#:V# works.

    The AP CP3 is thinking $$$:V2# is the command instead of :V2# for getting the version.

    You have to wait a few seconds before the CP3 interprets another command.

    The Astro-Physics documentation on how to initiate communications with their GTO CP controllers says you should send a # before sending the first commands to clear the GTO CP buffer.  SkySafari is not doing this.

    Dear William and Keiron,

    Did this ever get resolved? I am experiencing exactly the same problem trying to connect my Google Pixel 3a via BT to a US Converters UCBT232B BT-serial connected to an Astro-Physics CP3 controller. The phone connects to the adapter fine but communication to the mount fails, apparently for the reason William stated. Will there be a fix or an update to SkySafari? Thank you

    PPS: I'm running SkySafari 6 pro version 6.7.2.0 on Android.

    ALSO, the phone DOES talk to the mount just fine over the BT link when I run a dumb terminal app on the phone and manually type in commands using the Astro-Physics command language. The mount responds perfectly, so there's no problem in the hardware or software of the comm link. That would seem to indicate that SkySafari is not sending the appropriate commands, as it should. This should be fixed as SkySafari is advertised to work with the A-P CP3-4 controllers over BT.

    The latest is 6.8.0.6, and was released Jan 18. You should be able to see it on Play store. This is the version that has the latest Astro-Physics controller.

    Happy to report that SkySafari 6 now connects perfectly and quickly (~2 seconds) with my Astro-Physics CP3 mount servo controller with the app's Scope Type set to "Astro-Physics GTO".

    I spent a bit of time exercising all of the Astro-Physics specific commands and features, including the various Park positions, RA/ Dec entry, slew rates, etc, and everything worked perfectly. I did note that after parking and disconnecting SkySafari, then reconnecting, the mount would accept new slew commands and slew to the correct object / location, however the RA tracking was still disabled from the Park command and had to be manually re-enabled from the mount's keypad.

    In case it helps other users, I'm running SkySafari on a Google Pixel 3a, Android 11, interfacing to mount via Bluetooth using a US Converters UCBT232B serial converter. The converter works plugged into either the upper or lower serial port of the CP3.
