[Feature Request] How To Sync Equipment And Data From SkySafari 6 Pro On Old iPad To New iPad? (Answer: Use LiveSky - Read On!)

Greetings,

I am moving my apps and data over from my older iPad to a new iPad. This includes my SkySafari 6 Pro app and data.
I moved over my many Observing Lists, Equipment list and FOV scope displays.
After closing the app and reopening it I found that all this data was gone!

I can create a new observing list in the app and it also disappears after I close and reopen the app.
Can you please advise what is happening here.

Are you using a SkySafari 6 Pro + LiveSky account?  If you are using a LiveSky account then you should only need to login to your LiveSky account using SkySafari 6 Pro on the new iPad.  All your data and equipment will sync automagically!

    Thanks!

Kieron, thank you for your response.

I would like to try this again, please.
On the new iPad l have done a search for “Sharpless”, I then select “Make into an Observing List”, I can then go to the new”Search Results” Observing List and rename it to “Sharpless”, I can select Highlight, navigate around the star map, look at different objects. No problem. Then close the app, reopen the app, and the observing list is gone.

I am wondering if the problem arises from the fact that I have the SkySafari 6 Pro on two machines just at the moment before factory resetting the older iPad??

    Thank you.

    On your old iPad...

    • In SkySafari 6 Pro > Settings > LiveSky > Sign Up for LiveSky
    • Use your email, create a password.  Confirm the password.

    In a web browser...

    • LiveSky.com > Login with your account email and password.
    • Confirm all the equipment and data has been synced with LiveSky.com

    On your new iPad...

    • In SkySafari 6 Pro > Settings > LiveSky > Login to LiveSky.
    • Confirm all the equipment and data has been synced with SkySafari 6 Pro.

Please do this before deleting anything on your older iPad.

    Thanks!

    Hi Kieron,

    I have had a breakthrough.
I factory reset my old iPad and tried my “test” of creating an observing list and checking to see if it survives closing the app and restarting the app. This failed.

I created another observing list and tried to email it to myself. I received a message saying that the observing list “Does not yet exist on the server”.

So I created a LiveSky account and I have my test observing list on the LiveSky server. Suddenly my observing list survives the app being closed down and reopened.

It follows that this is a method to force people to use LiveSky.

    A couple of questions:

    1. Will my observing lists only survive while I have them on the LiveSky server? (I guess the test will be if I now delete my account and the observing list survives.)

    2. Will I have access to my observing lists while I am in a country area with no internet access?

    Regards.

LiveSky is the simplest solution to the problem you first posed.  How to transfer all your data to another new device.  Moreover, if you use multiple devices, and this also includes Starry Night 8, all your equipment and data is synced automatically, all the time.  LiveSky is an amazing service.  And, it is free.

SkySafari keeps a local copy of your equipment and data on the device, so an internet connection is not required.  SkySafari automatically backs up all your data anonymously - and this option can be turned off in:

Settings > Storage > Cloud Storage > BackUp My Data To Cloud

    Hi Kieron,

    Thanks for that.

Just to let you know i have reloaded my observing lists from my external HDD, and all back to where I was before moving to the new iPad.

    Regards.
