How To Match Magnification Calculated By SkySafari With Equipment And FOV Indicators? (Answer: Read On!)

Hi,

How can i see in SkySafari what my views would look like? i tried to match it with my setup (25x magnification FoV 2.5) but so far i think the 2.5 degrees FoV in SkySafari does not match what i actually can see, it's more like around 1 degrees FoV.

I would love to know what i would see when i have a setup with 170 magnification. Not sure which zoom setting you would need to match it more closely? Hope it's around 10.0'x18.0'

Hope you can advice me.

Also the manual says the following ''If you hold your mobile phone at arm's length, about 2 feet from your eyes, its 2-by-3 inch screen has an apparent size of 4.8 by 7.2 degrees. So, if you set the field of view width to 4.8 degrees (portrait mode) or 7.2 degrees (landscape mode), and hold your phone out at arm's length, the view on your phone should appear at the same scale as the real sky.''

How to set the field of view with to 4.8 degrees? because if i do this it does not match what i see with the naked eye. It's more close to around 60 degrees.
Also maybe it's a misspelled? could it be 48 degrees? because my 10x50 bino does not even show 4.8 degrees FoV.

    The easiest way to get an exact match is to first add your equipment, scope, eyepieces, barlow, paracorr, and then go to Observe > Scope Display and add FOV indicators for each combination you want to show. Hope this helps!

    Yes i did this, but when you have a eyepieces with AFOV 60 3.5mm and AFOV 100 2.7mm. The first one has a smaller indicator (crosshair) due to the smaller AFOV of course. So you need to zoom in more to match the boarders of the screen. I still do not know what zoom level i need to set for the proper magnification.

    Just matching the FOV indicator (crosshair) on screen does not tell you the appropriate magnification only the FOV right?

    Forgive my foolishness. I just don't understand it at all.

    No worries. The magnification is listed if you go to Observe > Scope Display, right under your selection for each Indicator. It might also help to scroll down and turn on labels so you can see which circle is what on screen.

    Another trick, if you're on the main SkySafari screen, click at the top right where the numbers are showing your zoom, then you'll be given 8 different zoom levels; 180°, 90°, etc. The last three are custom ones that match your top three FOV indicators that you can quickly jump to.

    Yes i see that the magnification is calculated by the app, but how does that translate to what i can see at that magnification?

    Basically what i am trying to find out is what view does 100x magnification gives me, and 200x etc so i have an idea what i can expect to see. I just want some more reference then the following simulator.

    Yes this is basically what i am doing to. So you could say that this view is around at 90x magnification right?

    But what if you add another oculair with the same EP and thus magnification but with a different TFOV?

    Then the FOV indicator would change size but the magnification stay the same. So matching the FOV circle to the border does not give an actual representation of the zoom. Maybe i am overthinking or missing some brain cells. How difficult can this be right? Or do you don't have to zoom in to match the FOV indicator to the border of the screen? I assume it doesn't matter which resolution screen you have.
