Why Is SkySafari 6 Plus On Android Crashing When Connected To A Sky-Watcher 250P Dobson Using A DIY BlueTooth Module? (Answer: DIY Bluetooth Modules Are Not An Officially Supported Configuration)

Sky Safari 6 Plus for Android is crashing very often when connected to my scope. It crashes few times during each observation session.
I use bluetooth connection to Sky-Watcher 250P Dobson.
If you want, I can help with diagnostics somehow.

  1. App and version number: SkySafari 6 Plus, 6.7.2.0
  2. OS version number: Android 10
  3. Scope make and model: Sky-Watcher 250P FlexTube Dobson
  4. Hand controller firmware version number: 4.39.04
  5. WiFi hardware (i.e. SkyFi 3, SkyBT): Bluetooth module
  6. Confirm WiFi/Bluetooth network connection via mobile device: BT connection working ok
  7. Serial cables: none
  8. SkySafari Scope Type setting: SkyWatcher SynScan via BT, AltAz Goto mount
  9. Alignment type process via hand controller: Brightest star + 2nd star
  10. Screenshots of error messages: none, app just crashes and disappears

    1. WiFi hardware (i.e. SkyFi 3, SkyBT): which bluetooth module specifically?
    2. Serial cable: how are you connecting from the bluetooth module?
    3. What is the last action in SkySafari before the crash?

1+2: The module is a common HC-05 module soldered directly to the internals of the hand controller based on info from https://astro.marxram.de/handcontroller-upgrade-bible/

3: no action, the app just dies and disappears. If you mean a user action, it seems random. I may try to figure out some relation and post the update later.

    Hi Miroslav,

Sorry, this is not an officially supported configuration.

If possible, please test using our SkyBT or SkyFi 3, and confirm the crashing is still an issue.

    Thanks!

    Hi Miroslav,

In SkySafari Settings > Scope Setup > Enable Save Log File

Run the app, connect, crash, get the log file (see Help), and attach here.

    Thanks!
