[OpenGL]* MacOS Catalina Security Update 2021-007 Crashes SN8 (Answer: Apple Security Update 2021-2008 Catalina Fixes The Issue!)

Hi,

I've had to install SN8 for classes taken at Queen'sU. All was well until I recently proceeded with Mac's updates. Since then, SN8 will not launch. I tried deleting everything and redownloading the software, but to no avail. Here is an excerpt of the error message I keep receiving. Please help, thanks!

The only way to get round this is to re-format your drive unfortunately and re-install Catalina but don't do any updates (well not the 2021-007 security one).

    Hi Jenny

Keiron got his MBP (early 2013) to work after the update. The only difference was that his MBP is the 15" model whereas mine is the 13". This means he also has the dual graphics option with both the NVidia GT 650M and the Intel HD 4000. I only have the Intel HD 4000 graphics and so I concluded that maybe his is working as there is a driver incompatibility only with the Intel HD 4000 chip and  not with the NVidia GT650M.

I would be interested what your model is (i.e. early 2013, screen size, RAM, CPU  and graphics). You can get all of that info from clicking the Apple logo on the top left.

    Best regards

    Richard

    Hi Jenny,

Please see my post : [Gatekeeper]* Why Does Catalina Security Update (19H1519) Crash Starry Night 8? (Answer: Read On!) – Simulation Curriculum Corp.

As Keiron says above there is an ongoing Apple forum thread on the issue. The prognosis does not look good I am afraid. In the mean time you could backup your system, boot with command + r and reinstall Catalina. Then download security update  006 and stick with that until (or if)  Apple fix the problem.

    Meilleures salutations!

Thank you for showing the spec of your MBP. Like me you are stuck with Catalina!

I'm sorry I didn't see this post before. I'm having the same issue. SE8 Enthusiast crashes at launch. Apple has listed this Mac model as Catalina compatible, but is it really? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210222

Just want to remind everyone that updating to Big Sur or Monterey is another solution for this problem.

Is Catalina the last OS supported on your MacBook?

    Hi Keiron

Big Sur I think is not compatible with machines with Intel HD 4000 graphics (i.e. those less than around  mid 2013?).

    Cheers
