[SkyWire]* Does SkySafari 7 Pro Still Support SkyWire On iOS? (Answer: No)

I am unable to control my LX200 Classic using SkyWire, I can still control it using SkySafari Pro 6. It was extremely easy to set up in V6 sadly it is not in V7 is this a known issue that has a fix because it is very disappointing to pay for an upgrade that makes things worse.

    Wayne,

Do you have SS6 and SS7 on the same iOS device, and SkyWire works with SS6 but not with SS7?

I believe this has nothing to do with SkySafari 7 Pro - that the issue is SkyWire is no longer supported on the latest versions of iOS.

    Thanks!

    Hi Kieron,

Yes I have both versions on the same device and it controls fine in v6 on my iPad with IOS 14.7.1. I don’t have any options to connect to a LX200 10” Classic inV 7 and I just get directed to looking at network settings whereas I am driving it using SkyWire through a homemade switchbox and serial cable into the RS232 on the scope.

I just checked my iphone 11 to see what version IOS and its using 14.8.1. I confirm that v6 connects and drives the telescope but v7 fails.

If both Apple devices using different versions of IOS work using SkyWire with SS6 but not SS7 it seems it cannot be an issue with the operating system.

Sorry, Wayne, it appears that support for SkyWire has been dropped with SS7.

We have not sold SkyWire for a few years now.  We are not going to support SkyWire in SS7.

Ok Kieron, I use SkySafari to position the scope so will continue to use SS6. Unfortunately I have purchased the latest version believing this would be possible in SS7. Is it possible to cancel my purchase?

If you ask Apple support for a refund I am sure they will oblige.

    Sorry to disappoint, Wayne.

    Thanks Kieron,

It’s a real shame that you have removed the support for SkyWire, driving the scope in SS6 works beautifully, much better than searching for COM ports on Windows devices and updating of asteroid and comet positions is a breeze.

SS7 has received a massive upgrade in regards to telescope support via INDI and Alpaca.

Unfortunately, SkyWire did not receive many sales.  What SkyWire can do SkyFi 3 can also do, and most everyone would prefer the WiFi connection.

Those, like yourself, that do use SkyWire love it.  But, everything in tech is always changing.  We have to follow and invest our resources into the trends that are supported.

    Sorry.

    Kieron,
Completely understand the rationale behind the changes thanks for taking the time to explain why I was unable to use SkyWire.

I am another SkyWire user and am happy with it. I don't want to purchase a SkyFi unit to control my scope. Yet another case where Simulation Curriculum removes a function and calls it an "upgrade". Happened to me with Starry Night 8 Pro Plus upgrade - never did make the FOV rotate with sky position in equatorial mode, made it useless for astrophotography, so I still went back to Starry Night Pro Plus 7 and wrote off the money I wasted on the SN 8 "upgrade". Now I can't use SkyWire with my SkySafari 7 Pro upgrade. At least with this "upgrade" I can get my money back. I've requested a refund from Apple.

I will present our discussion to the development team and see if they are inclined to review the current implementation.

Likely, SkyWire support will not be forthcoming.  So, I don't want to get your hopes up.

But, we will see what they say.

    Thanks!

I to want to use skywire with SSP7
Same as Wayne - skywire works perfectly on SSP6 on the same device
Any chance you would deduct the price of skywire off the price of a skyfi? For all the skywire users that have been disappointed with you removing it’s connectablity in SSP7

For what it’s worth … loss of SkyWire support in SS7 has caused me to start using another app on my iOS devices to control my scope.   really too bad … I loved SkySafari, and have purchased every single version from the very beginning.   Also purchased a SkyFi and three SkyWires.

I know you don’t care about individual customers … but removing support for something that this customer loved and uses all the time is about the worst thing a company that produces software can do.    I’m pissed, and taking my business (and recommendations) elsewhere.

We are looking at the SkyWire issue to see if it can be implemented.  We meant to include this functionality in a previous version but it is not working properly.

Don't give up just yet.  I will let you know if there is a showstopper.  Otherwise, please be patient.

    Thanks for your feedback, Robert!
