How Come SkySafari Is Turning Off Mount Tracking In ASIAIR?

Hi All,
Last night I was using SkySafari 7 Pro and ASIAIR plus. I was in the process of imaging NGC2070. I launched SkySafari and chose the command to connect to the mount. This caused the mount to stop tracking and trashed the sub. I was able to repeat the fault by reconnecting SkySafari in the same manner. I am using “EQMod with Skysafari” setting on ASIAIR. I have not had this problem with SkySafari 6 which I have used for some time.

Does anyone know the fix for this?

Many thanks.

SB

Hi. I have a similar issue with my Avalon StarGO2 mount. See my recent post in the forum. The StarGO2 and the ASIAIR are both INDI severs. SS7 is an INDI Client. This confirms my suspicion that the INDI client implementation in SS7 is faulty.

I had to revert to SS6 for my imaging sessions.

Any update on this issue for INDI-server-based telescope control?

Yes happy to join the beta testing. I use both SS7 and SS6 with my AsiAir Pro attached to the AZEQ6 mount. I control using Ipad Air 2020 running the ipadOS 15.3 software. Occasionally i also use ipad Mini using ipadOS 15.3

Just following up, is this still an issue, or we can mark it as resolved?

    Thanks!

Keiron - it is fixed (for me) in the beta but I do not know if that made it into any future update as I still have the beta (that works) and have not wanted to replace it with the SS7 until this was refreshed?

How do you set up tracking for you mount using SKYSafari 7. Basic question, why can't I find this answer anywhere on this forum

SkySafari does not enable/disable or activate/deactivate tracking. This is typically done by the hand controller of the mount. After GOTO or slewing, SkySafari should set the tracking back to the same tracking setting as it was before the mount movement.

More fancily this can be done with an INDI-server/client software (e.g. EKOS, iINDI), if your mount is controlled by an INDI driver from a computer or a Raspberry Pi (StellarMate, ASIAIR, Astroberry, …).

Guys I am new at this. Still learning. I have SKYSafari 7.1.3   Does the latest  up date fix the tracking issue, what version is it. Does it set up tracking automaticity through GOTO and slewing. You really don't have to go through those 1960 technology Hand Controllers do you?   In SKYportal it is really easy to set tracking.  How do you do an up date to latest SKYSafari for an Ipad

    Hi William,

After polar aligning your mount and slewing to the first star, USUALLY, the mount is already tracking the object. The tracking status is usually somewhere shown on the display or in some menu of the hand controller. The SKYportal is basically replacing the old Celestron hand controller. So you could use either one. Note, this is actually not SkySafari’s job/idea to replace such basic functions of the hand controller. I agree with you, it would be nice to have those useful functions in SS7 such as polar alignment, tracking settings, and even plate-solving-based mount alignment with a camera. I already requested such functions a couple of times. There is freeware out there that can do this (KStars/EKOS). I still like SS7 much better, though.

If you do not want to use a hand controller or SKYportal, you need to use some type of computer/device to connect to the mount controller and check and enable the status of the mount. Usually this is an ASCOM or INDI-based software.

If you want to use a mobile device, then you can use Stellarmate, Astroberry or the ASIair. Which are all probably an overkill to what you want to achieve, unless you are into astrophotography.

My mount has its own integrated INDI server, so I can access it via iINDI from my iPhone or iPad.

On the iPad, you update SS7 just like any other app.

To make my TLDR; post shorter ;-) … SS7 only takes care of slewing the mount. Polar alignment and checking the status of any other mount setting is not available in any version of SkySafari. This is an unfortunate short-coming, agreed!

This week it is supposed to clear up again and I can double check the tracking issue within the INDI ecosystem again. INDI is used in the ASIAIR.

If you are having a tracking issue unrelated to the ASIAIR or any other INDI interface, there might be a different issue with your mount set-up.
