List of catalogue names and abbreviations?

When selecting objects within Planner, you can filter using a catalogue name or abbreviation, e.g. "NGC"
Likewise when doing an object search, you can enter the catalogue name or abbreviation and it will return all objects that have a designation within that catalogue.

But I can't find a list anywhere of what those actual catalogue names and abbreviations are.

(1) Does such a list exist?

(2) Suggestion: the functionailty would be better if you could select from a drop-down list rather than enter (unvalidated) strings with separators.

    I've been doing some searching online for lists of catalogues and their abbreviations.

    For example, there's a list on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_astronomical_catalogues#A, but that isn't complete, e.g. STT is missing.
    The catalogue lookup on the SIMBAD website http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/Dic seems to be quite comprehensive though.

    Is there an agreed, definitive list of catalogue abbreviations? Does SkySafari take its list of abbreviations from anywhere in particular?

    Hi Jamie, my understanding is that the abbreviations we use are the result of combining several catalogs together and cross referencing so that we only have a single entry for each object.  

    I also like SIMBAD, at some point we could add a link to take you to it for additional abbreviations.
