Look in Options (left vertical tab) ---> Stars ---> Stars <--- make sure this is checked.
Look in File ---> Preferences ---> Brightness/Contrast --->Star Type <--- change this to Default or try a different one.

I tried this without success. I am wondering if moving the software to a different platform (old Windows 10 box was dying) has anything to do with this. Installation required copying several files afterwards: prerequisites, planets.
