SkySafari 5 Plus | Freeze & Crash On Rooted Simbans Presto Tablet, Running Android 5.1

The title says it all. The app appears to install without issues. However, when attempting to run it, the splash screen comes up, followed by what appears to be the main screen (buttons appear, etc.,) but is blank/black otherwise. The clock in the upper right hand corner runs for 3 seconds, then stops. The entire program then freezes. After ten seconds or so, one of two things always happens: I either get an Android error message that the program has stopped, or it crashes at once, taking me back to the Android home screen.

This is a rooted Simbans Presto tablet, running Android 5.1.  There is 6 gig of internal memory free, and 11 gig of SD card free. I have around 50 apps on this tablet, all of which run flawlessly. I've been extremely happy with the tablet for over a year now.

I have tried numerous re-installs, did the delete folder trick, wiped dead space with CClearner, etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks.

    Hi Everett,

Have you moved the app to an external SD card, or is everything still in its default install location?

    Thanks!

    Hello Keiron,

Everything is still in its default location, i.e., the app itself is in the internal memory of the tablet (not the SD card), and the SkySafari folder appears on the SD card. Is that the way it's supposed to be? I haven't done anything special during or after the installation.

    Thanks,

    Everett

If it's all default that is good.  What about antivirus apps, or security apps, is there anything running that could be responsible for shutting down SkySafari?

    Hi again,

I use BitDefender Free Antivirus; it only runs from the cloud during installation; SkySafari passed the installation scan without a hitch.

I shut the firewall off completely. So there should be a clear path for SkySafari.

I'll remove Bitdefender and keep the firewall shut off and try a complete reinstall and see if that makes a difference. I'll also delete the SkySafari folder before reinstalling.

    Thanks,

    Everett

    Hello,

Well, I completely removed the antivirus and the firewall and tried four more times, but no joy. I'll note that it let me into the setup menu these times before freezing up and then crashing. Still a blank screen otherwise. Is there anything else to try, or is this a lost cause?

    Thanks,

    Everett

Well, I've tried all manner of reinstalls, even going so far as to try it on a backup tablet (same make and config), but no luck. I'm really disappointed, since SkySafari Plus was so highly recommended to me.

Since there's been no updates here, I assume it's a lost cause.

So, could you please arrange for a refund, since I'm unable to use the app.

    Thanks.

    Everett

    Hi Everett,

I am sorry to learn you have not succeeded.  The issue is likely originating in the "rooting" of your device, the custom OS, or the device model itself.  SkySafari is installed across thousands of Android tablets and phones around the world, and has been for many years.  So, this is not something about SkySafari 5 itself.  I am sure if you pick up a brand name (Samsung) A-list tablet (you get what you pay for) and try to install SS5 on the default OS (no root) then everything will be perfect.  Still, I understand you have your preference, and reasons, for rooting, etc, and I can understand your frustration here.  Please send the Google GPA receipt to me here:

    Thanks for trying!

Okay, I do not need a refund now. I went ahead and bought a new cell phone. SkySafari seems to work on it okay. Thanks.
