How To Estimate Eyepiece Magnification Using Starry Night Pro Plus 8? (Answer: Read On!)

There is no best field of view (fov) for each object per say since it can be subjective.  Generally you use higher magnification for multiple stars, planets, and planetary nebulae (40x+).  Lower magnification for larger galaxies, nebulae, open clusters.  In addition to magnification, user needs to consider the eyepieces apparent field of view and even exit pupil.  They can refer to a primer here: https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/telescope-calculator/

Good news is that Starry Night does most of these calculations and can display an angular diameter circle in the sky that matches the view through the telescope for the users specific equipment combination (eyepiece, telescope, barlow etc).  The user can read up on the FOV feature in the manual (page 108).

Page 152 in the manual also contains a list of shortcuts for Cursor Tool Selection.

Hope this helps.
