FIRST time user looking for manual with legends for SkySafari Pro 6

I have virtually ZERO astronomy knowledge, I just like to look up at the sky and identifies stars/planets/galaxies just for fun. I looked in the online help topics, they are far too detailed for me, no clue to what 70 % of the words they use mean.  I need a basic manual on how to use SSP6 (iOS) with legends. What do ovals, doted lines, solid lines around blobs or big squares around stars groupings represent/indicate? Where do I find this information? I would love to shut off the square, especially when you magnify (very distracting when all you see is white squares every where). I dont know what the white squares are so I cant look up how to turn them off?

Can you please produce a graphic visual manual that shows, step by step, how to use SFP6 & what all the icons & symbols represent?

You can get some help by "clicking" the object you do not what is, and using "Selection - Object Info" to find out what it is. At least you will get a hint of what words you can look for in an astronomy textbook or Wikipedia.

The dotted lines could be borders between constellations, or the outlines around some deep-sky objects. The little ovals are probably galaxies, and the squares, well, I do not see them, so I do not know what they could be.

    Bela,

I guess we don't really have a legend for the symbols.  I'll see if I can address that.  They are pretty standard for most astronomy atlases, but that doesn't really help you.

You can always find out what a symbol means by selecting it and bringing up the Info panel.  It will say what the object type is.  Anyway, here is a brief description

    • Ovals - galaxies
    • Dotted Circle - open star clusters
    • Solid Circle with "plus sign" inside - globular clusters
    • Solid circle with lines extending outside of it - planetary nebulae
    • Solid box or irregular outline - bright nebulae

If you see a lot of squares, then you probably have "Dark Nebulae" turned on (it is off by default).  You can change this by going into the Settings > Deep Sky screen.

Feel free to ask other questions.
