SkySafari 6.0.1 (MacOS) Does Not Communicate With NexStar GPS 11" via a SkyFi 2

I cannot get SkySafari Pro 6.0.1 to communicate with my NexStar GPS11".

It works fine with SkySafari 4 and my old iPhone 4. Close SkySafari 4 and open up SkySafari 6 and connects to the SkyFi OK but the telescope does not respond.I have checked that the settings are the same in v6 as v4. SkySafari 4 works every time.

(Set time and location is not checked in either version v4 or v6)

Is SkySafari 6 no longer compatible with SkyFi 2 (Firmware 2.3.3)

Kind regards,

Bob.

    Bob,

What version is iOS are you running?  I've found that iOS 11 no longer can connect to the Ad Hoc network that SkyFi 2 sets up.  It sounds like that is not your problem.  It sounds like you can connect but just cannot control the scope.

I'm not aware of any reason that SS6 shouldn't still work fine with SkyFi 2.  Unfortunately, my adapter cable that plus into the SkyFi 2 has got bad.  I thought I had another one around here but have been unable to find it.  We don't have any more in stock.  So I have not been able to test with SkyFi 2 lately.

However, we have not gotten any reports from customers that this does not work and I would think we would have if that were the case.

Do you know anyone that has a SkyFi 3 you could borrow to test with?  That might let us know if there has been some change in the code that is causing the problem.

    Hi Bill,

The iOS is an old one 7.1.2 and works OK but that is interesting as I am thinking of upgrading my phone so I will not throw the old one away.

Unfortunately I do not have access to a SkyFi 3 but I will ask at my club.

I will also try to connect up via cable and see if it will work that way. Will keep you posted.

    Cheers,

    Bob

Yes, if you have a SkyWire (I assume that's what you mean by "cable"), that would be a good test.

    Hi Bill,

Actually I was referring to a serial cable using an RS232 FTDI serial to usb adapter.

I do have a SkyWire but that is only for my old iPhone so not really relevant.

Anyway it works on the cable OK so I changed to my later hand v4 controller and it now works OK on the above cable and SkyFi-2.

If I find out what the issue is with the original H/C I will let you know.

So all OK here sorry for bothering you. Many thanks.

    Cheers, Bob.

Wait.  Are you using a USB cable coming out of the SkyFI and then the USB-to-serial adapter to go to the serial cable going to the hand controller?  I would think that would never work.  Most USB-to-serial adapters need drivers to make them work.  Of course, the SkyFi doesn't have the drivers.

Anyway, sounds like you have a solution that works.  That's good.

    Hi Bill,

No.Just to confirm, I was using the USB to serial adapter cable direct from the H/C to the Mac. The SkyFi was not in circuit for that test.

When using the SkyFi-2 I was using the cable supplied by Southern Stars.

    Cheers,

Ah, ok.  We were talking about iOS and that is what threw me.  So it looks like it is a HC problem, not SkyFi 2.  Hope you can figure it out.

    Hi Bob,

The baseline requirement for Celestron support in SkySafari 4/5/6 is Celestron firmware version 4.0 or higher.  I think that's what you just figured out.

    Thanks Keiron,

Yes I had seen that information on the SkyFi website. I do have the Celestron 4.06 Firmware installed.

The H/C with the problem is a v2.2 and the the other is a v4 which is programmable so it is probably down to the H/C as well.

However why does it work with SkySafari 4 and not the others? Never mind it will work remotely with the v4 so I will use that.

If I find out what is happening I will let you know.

Thanks and bye for now. Bob.
