[Feature Request] 'Landing' on solar system objects

Dear developers,

I totally appreciate that you have put the 'Orbit' function in SS, it raises the awesomeness (and educational ability) of the app by several magnitudes :)

Would be very hard to enable the virtual viewer to not just orbit but to 'land' on that object - as if s/he were on a certain point of the surface of that planet/moon/asteroid... and just look around from there?

I know that at orbit mode you can get closer to that object - and get to the distance of the surface or even to reach the geometrical centre in that way (if you choose to go closer than the radius of that object, the surface becomes invisible). But the navigation is way different than in the earth-centered lookaround and when orbiting you cannot simulate as if you were standing on that rotating surface.

I suppose many of the solar system objects don't have an established lat/long coordinate grid and maybe we don't know the rotating parameters (or even the geometry/shape) of them. But this could be no problem at least at the moons.

I could imagine this as a 'Land' button only active at Orbit mode and if tapped would put the observer on the closest or the farthest point of the surface from the current orbiting position. Then the button could change to 'Takeoff'. There would be no need of controls for virtual walking on the object because you could 'takeoff', return to Orbit mode, change the perspective and 'Land' again.

Sorry for the long post, I will be happy if you share your thoughts.

Best:

Krisztian

    Krisztian,

Thanks for the suggestion.  We have talked among ourselves about adding landing on other bodies.  It would be a significant amount of work to implement this and it is really not in the design goals of SkySafari (it is debatable whether Orbit mode even is).  But it may happen some day.

    Dear Bill,

thank you for your answer! Orbit mode is really one of the treasures of this app, I am very happy you implemented that. You all did and do a great job and invented some truly unique things!

PS: Cannot wait to try AR mode in Android ;)

    Hi Krisztian,

FYI - you can land on all 3D objects, all exoplanets, using Starry Night software.
