Indi or Indigo support

Hi,

SkySafari is advertised as "Professional Telescope Astronomy Software".

However, SF offers only very basic goto support, not more and not less.

Please add Indigo to SkySafari, which adds more telescopes including the possibility to park and unpark lots of telescopes.

All the best,

Oliver

This is unlikely to happen anytime soon.  Every time we look at adding INDI support, it seems it is not in a very polished state.  We will keep watching though.

This makes me wonder, because more and more freeware is adding INDI/INDIGO support:

KStars, PHD2, Skychart (Cartes du Ciel).

Please (please), take a look again and support INDIGO *beg*

Keep in mind that INDI and INDIGO aren't quite the same thing.

I think the latest version of INDI is v1.7

INDIGO, on the other hand, is a bit more polished, knows how to speak the INDI control protocol (1.7), but also eliminates some of the licensing problems (you can use INDIGO commercially since it isn't licensed under GPL).  The latest version of INDIGO is 2.0-73.

You can get a bit more info here:  http://indigo-astronomy.org/faq.html

But what I think is particularly cool about INDIGO (vs ASCOM) is that INDIGO is network-based.  In ASCOM, everything must be run by just one computer.  In INDIGO, it's a Bonjour network service.  This means it would be possible to run a linux box (or even a raspberry pi) in an observatory to control all the "stuff", but control it all with an iPad, iPhone, etc.

From this perspective, it's a closer to something that can actually work for mac and iOS clients than ASCOM (unless they do a complete re-write and drop the use of Microsoft .Net ... will probably never be possible.)

I do use run the software from CloudMakers.eu on my mac ... AstroDSLR, AstroImager, AstroGuider, INDIGO Server, Astrometry, etc. and ... so far it's seems pretty clean.

So I just was able to successfully connect skysafari to my AVX using indi. Someone has made a skysafari module. I'm not sure if I understand it quite right, but it looks like they made everything look like an LX200:) I was able to slew the scope all while indi is controlling the mount and guide camera, and PHD2 is running. https://indilib.org/devices/telescopes/skysafari.html

Please help them out if you can!

I'd like to push this topic again. I am also very interested in an INDIGO integration. INDIGO has grown quite majeure and stable meanwhile. Especially when using it in conjunction with a Raspberry Pi.

All my equipment (mount, focusers, wheels, cameras, sky quality meters, power box, and many more) are connected via INDIGO and I have made almost only good experiences.

Hence I would deeply appreciate also to use SkySafari to control the scope via Wi-Fi.

It has the big advantage you would be hardware driver independent and you would have an easy to maintain abstraction layer in SkySafari. You could cover many telescopes without taking care about its specific hardware.

Also it is protocol compatible with INDI.

    Thank you in advance!

    Clear skies

This is a non issue, at least for indi. I've now tried an AVX, and a Losmandy GM811G, and they both work very well using indi. Indi always converts a mounts native interface to a "meade LX Classic" interface, and that's what you use in Skysafari. You can try it if you use kstars/ekos. Just make sure to include the indi skysafari module in your indi startup script.

Taking a quick look at indigo, it appears that it will work with indi drivers, so you just need to use the indi skysafari driver:

    From their FAQ:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Can INDIGO client or application use INDI driver?
Yes, INDIGO wire protocol adapter has the ability to fall down to legacy INDI wire protocol version 1.7 to maintain backward compatibility with INDI drivers. In this mode also property and item names are mapped to INDI standard corresponding to version 1.2.

If you want use linked driver option or to use different wire protocol, you have to use INDIGO driver.

Can INDI client or application use INDIGO driver?
Yes, if client or application will initiate communication over INDI wire protocol, INDIGO driver will simulate behavior of INDI driver with common base set of properties.
