How To Generate Observing List, Based On Location, Only Show Objects Above Specific Altitude, And Then Order By Time Of Meridian Crossing (Read On!)

 Hi Guys,

Just got my SSP6 App and I am trying to understand the best way to generate an observing list of the best objects that will be visible to me that night form my observing location.

I have my own observatory so my normal geographic  location is my observing location.

So what I want to do is get SSP6 to generate me a list, based on my location BUT only show me what is going to be visible (preferably at least 20 degrees elevation) and then I want to order it by time of meridian crossing?

Is this possible, if not what is the closest that I can get? Please note that I do not want to see those objects NOT visible that night as there are far too many!

Thanks

Ian

    Hey Ian--

To do this, you'll want to first set your location in settings, then click on the Observe button and go to Planner. From there, you can select the types of objects you want to see, set a magnitude limit if desired, choose a range for altitude in degrees, restrict to any catalogs you might want (NGC, IC, Messier, etc.) then set the time range you'll be observing.  After clicking Do Search, you'll see the results and you can click Make Into Observing List at the top.  After it's created, go back and click Observe > Observing Lists and choose the Search Results list at the bottom.  Next you want to go to Actions and Settings so you can sort the objects by Transit Time (I think this is what you're looking for).  Hit back and you're done!

    Hi Chris,

Many thanks, I have followed your instructions. First time I Selected all Object types but restricted to Mag 0 - 10; Altitude 30 -90, Azimuth 180 - 270; separation 2 - nothing Time 9pm - 2am and it came back with 10,000 objects, Ooops! When I checked through many of them they were all double stars as far as I could see!

So I then deselected all objects apart from Globular  Clusters and re-ran the search with the same restrictions. It found Zero Objects.

Does this mean that I haven't got teh catalogues enabled or something like that? If so how do I do that?

Also I seem to get into a condition where my Android is showing the time control panel at the bottom of the screen and then I don't appear to be able to see the tool bar at the bottom of the screen and the drop down/pop up arrow at lower left does not reveal the tool bar!

    Sorry for so many questions!

    Hey Ian

Try running again but without the separation parameters. There are no catalogues to enable or disable.

On the Android issue, I'm not sure I understand. Perhaps taking and attaching a screen shot would help.

No worries on too many questions, happy to help!
