Where Is My Customized Data? (Solution: Restored With Help From Developer Ros - Remember, We Have Your Data Backed Up!)

Today (Dec 24) I opened SkySafari on my iPad (SkySafari 6 Pro, version 6.3.0.0) and discovered all the customized information I had added over the years is gone - customized observing lists, and all the equipment information used to project FOV indicators is gone - no telescopes, eyepieces, cameras, lenses, etc. all is gone. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this lately, or if it is unique to me.  It will take me a while to reconstruct all that has disappeared, unless it has been stored somewhere and I can figure out how to retrieve it.

    Hi John, 

    I'm very sorry to hear that!  The SkySafari user data is always backed up to our cloud server. We will work on retrieving it.

    John, can you answer a couple of questions - 

    1) Have you signed up for LiveSky with an email address? If so, will you log in to livesky with a browser at www.livesky.com and verify that all of your custom data is still available?

    2) Can you tell me approximately how many Observing Lists, pieces of Equipment, Observations, and Settings files you previously had, but are no longer available on your ipad?

    In reply to your questions:

    1.  As far as I can tell, I've not signed up for LiveSky.  It sounds like you would recommend I do it now in hopes that I can then see the custom data, correct?

    2. By now, I've manually re-installed most of the equipment data I once had.  It wasn't as tedious as I feared since many of the devices are listed in the pre-loaded lists and all I had to do is select them.  There were only a handful of pieces of equipment which I had to create using the custom tool. 

    As far as observing lists, the one that I most want back is entitled Mt. Wilson 60".  Any other list, would be nice to have but not essential. There may have been about seven or eight of these additional  observing lists.  Some titles that I can recall of the lists include: carbon stars, Pensack 500, objects for light polluted skies,  

    I had not created any lists of Observations.

    As far as Settings, I had only one, which I called, "John's Standard View".

    From our records it appears that you signed up for a livesky account in December of 2017.  Somehow your installation of SkySafari has lost track of that login (we are investigating why). 

    I recommend that you login to that account on www.livesky.com.  You'll have an opportunity to reset the password if you have forgotten it.  Take a look at the data and make sure that it is your custom data.

    Once you are satisfied, login to this account with SkySafari on your iPad. Go to Settings/LiveSky, then click the button at the bottom that says 'Login to Different Account', and login with your email/password.

    An important caveat: the new data you've created since the loss, (including all the equipment) will be added to the data already associated with this email, which will be pulled down from the server, so you will end up with two copies of anything you've recreated.  

    We can help you eliminate the duplicates if necessary.

    Let me know if this solution is sufficient - again, I apologize for the loss.  We are looking into why it might have happened.

    Hello Ros:

     

    The problem is fixed.  Thank you for your instructions.  I was able to change my password for Livesky since I didn't remember it.  With the new password, I was able to connect from the iPad and my old data reappeared.  

    At this point, my customized data has been restored to the copy of SkySafari on my iPad.  The only remaining thing for me to do is to delete the duplicate entries on the Equipment List, since I had manually re-entered most of the gear while waiting to resolve this issue.
