Why When Using An App Do I Get A StarSense Alignment Error "Too Few Stars"?

When I align Starsense via the HC, it aligns as it should. When I align it via Skysafari or Skyportal, it gives an error popup that says too few stars acquired (or something like that). As far as I can tell, the wifi is working OK. It starts the alignment, but soon gives the error popup. Help???

    Hi,

Please be specific in outlining the problem.  Please include:

    2. OS
    3. Scope make and model
    4. StarSense alignment type
    5. Step-by-step how you are aligning
    6. At which step you see the error
    7. Screenshot of the error message

    Thanks!

App and version number   Skysafari 6.2.0.38

    OS   Android Nougat 7.1.1

Scope make and model   Nexstar 8SE

    StarSense align type   Auto-align

    Step-by-step how you are aligning

After setting the phone wifi to the Celestron network, I run Sky safari and I get the choice of "Connect" or "Connect and Align". I select "Connect and Align", and after probably 30 seconds or so it displays the message "Too few stars...". I don't remember it exactly, and I can't try again for a few days, but it's apparently not seeing enough stars to do the alignment. It does all this while in the starting position, it never moves to another position. It does it even though I previously did a successful alignment using the Hand Controller, so there definitely are enough stars for it to align. It does exactly the same thing if I use Skyportal.

At which step you see the error    See above

Screenshot of the error message     Can't get one right now, maybe soon. But it's as described above.

Something I just figured out: When I first got Skysafari, I got 5 Plus. I still have that on my tablet. But when I hard reset my phone, I had to reload, and it was 6 that I reloaded, but not Plus. So today I went to Play Store to find 5 Plus, but it's no longer there. I wasn't having this problem when I had 5 Plus on my phone, and I don't think 6 (not Plus) is supposed to connect with the scope (even tho it apparently does)? Kinda confusing, but I paid extra for 5 Plus, and now I can't get it. So it seems like it should be made available to me, or I should get 6 Plus without having to pay again. That may be related to why I'm having this problem. BTW, if it's clear tonight I'll try to run it from the tablet with 5 Plus. It used to work OK, but I haven't tried it for a long time. I'll let you know what happens. But I'm also having the same problem with Skyportal, so maybe it isn't related?

It wasn't in my apps on Google Play, but I was able to send it from my tablet via a file sharing app. I used Skyportal last night and it worked OK. I didn't try Skysafari, but I will on the next clear night. Hopefully that's tomorrow night, and hoping the error was some kind of transient thing and all will be good. I'll let you know.

If SkyPortal works then SkySafari will work too.  If you get an error "Too few stars" then that means the StarSense camera cannot detect enough stars to plate solve a position in the sky - in which case, you need to ensure there are no obstacles blocking the StarSense (i.e. trees, buildings, etc) or you need to wait for darker skies, or take the StarSense + scope to a darker location.  "Too few stars" is not an issue with SkyPortal or SkySafari.  If the error is produced under deep dark skies with no visible obstructions then it is a hardware issue.  And you would need to contact Celestron support.

That all said, looks like you got it working, an excellent result!

    Clear skies!
