Why Does A SkySafari 6 Pro Alignment Loses Previous HC Calibration? (Answer: Read On!)

I aligned and calibrated with Starsense using the HC. The alignment was perfect, goto was dead on. Then I powered down and back up with wifi and Skysafari. After aligning with Skysafari, I got a popup that said "User settings were reset...". After that, I powered down and up with no wifi, and aligned again using the HC. When I did a goto, it was way off. My question is: Does "User settings were reset" mean it removed the Starsense calibration that was done with the HC? If I want to sometimes use HC and sometimes use Skysafari, do I have to recalibrate each time? Maybe this question belongs in a Starsense forum, but I couldn't find one and I thought you would know the answer.

Using StarSense + Celestron WiFi you can not align with the StarSense hand controller and then align again with SkySafari.  Is that what you are doing?

Using StarSense + Celestron WiFi you must first connect and align using SkySafari.

Then you should be able to move the mount using the StarSense hand controller so long as you don't try to do any alignment or goto using the HC.

No, that's not what I'm doing. The question is about whether Starsense loses calibration that was done with HC if, after powering OFF and then back ON, I align with Skysafari:

    1. Turn power ON, no wifi
    2. Auto-align with Starsense using HC
    3. Calibrate using HC, the calibration info is saved in the camera, right?
    4. Realign as required using HC
At this point, all is OK, Goto is good, scope can be used with HC
    5. Power OFF
    6. Power ON, with wifi
    7. Set phone wifi to Celestron-OD
    8. Start Skysafari, select Connect and Align
    9. Starsense successfully aligns, all good so far
    10. After alignment, a popup says "Calibration Required    User settings were reset..."
    11. Power OFF
    12. Power ON, no wifi
    13. Auto-align with Starsense using HC
    14. Perform a Goto - it's way off of target object!

Did it miss the target because realigning using Skysafari (step 8) deleted the calibration I did using HC (step 3)? Is it no longer calibrated at this point? Does "User settings were reset" mean previous calibration was lost, even though it's saved in the camera (assuming it is)? If I use HC some nights, and Skysafari some other nights (powering OFF after each time), do I have to recalibrate each time I switch from one to the other because each alignment destroys the other's calibration?

We talked with Celestron about this, and here is their reply.

As of the latest release, the center calibration is stored in the CAMERA. If you calibrate with the HC, it is still valid in the app, and vis-versa. My guess to the hand-controller not pointing correctly is just a false alignment reference.
First off, you should make sure that you have the latest versions (of SkySafari 6). Previously the Celestron Wi-FI stored the calibration info on the phone.
Oh and #10 is not an error, you just never calibrated with the app. This is an unfortunate mistake in logic when they created StarSense by not storing an "is calibrated" value in the camera. So therefore, every connected application (the HC, SkyPortal, etc) will pop up the calibration message until that application has run the calibration routine. BUT the camera is technically calibrated so the user can ignore the message.

If you are still unsatisfied, still encountering difficulty please contact Celestron support - as these error messages, and the logic behind the StarSense calibration process, etc, is all their own code, that they maintain.

    Thanks!

Thanks, Keiron. That's what I needed to know.
