[Bug]* SkySafari 6 Pro on Android + Celestron StarSense Plate Solve Fail

My setup is Celestron Advanced VX mount, StarSense camera, Celestron Wi-Fi.
The last time I was using my scope was on July 13/2019 (two weeks ago) and all was working just fine.
Then last Saturday (July 27/2019) i was no longer to successfully align my scope connecting to SkySafari
6 Pro or SkySafari 6 Plus. Connections to scope no problem, StarSense working solving Plate number one
but any subsequent attempt to solve next plat ended up with error, not able to solving plate. Tried
numerous times no success. Happened with both SkySafari 6 Pro and Plus.
Run aligning procedure with StarSense hand control successfully. So, there is no problem with StarSense
camera.
then run aligning procedure with my old SkySafari 5 Pro again successfully. So, there is no any
connection problem.
I run all these procedures (failed and successful) from my cell (Android) and from my tablet with the
same results. So, there is no hardware problem.
I uninstalled and reinstalled SkySafari, no fix. I set SkySafari to defaults, no fix.
So, what happened between July 13 and July 27?
There was not any hardware change. Only change I can think about was purchasing and installing Apollo 11
Mission in bought SkySafari 6 Pro and Plus. My old SkySafari 5 didn’t have this option so it reminds
unaffected and work.
So, my conclusion is the culprit is Apollo 11 Mission or any other possible update to SkySafari.
Would be nice if somebody read this and consider fixing this issue.
After all, at this point SkySafari is useless to me and quite expensive lemon.

I have a posting from five days ago reporting the same problem, although I just loaded the software so I did have it working in the past as you did.  FYI I also reported it to Celestron, but have no traction there as of yet.  I got a response but it didnt help with the problem.  The Celestron ticket number is #OCM-785-67168 .

I believe it is not Celestron problem but SkySafari as you can see from my testings.

At this point I believe the culprit is Apollo 11 Mission patch I installed between June 13 and June 27.

When I first reinstalled SkySafari. this patch was automatically installed since its footprint in my cell and tablet operational system.

I just did uninstalling again and this time I deleted every SkySafari folder from system.

Then installed SkySafari again.   This time Apollo 11 Mission is not installed.

I will test this configuration as soon as I have time and clear sky. I will see if my theory (I hope) is true.

i agree.  The SkySafari support folks insisted I post an issue to Celestron but I dont think its likely a celestron problem.

I have one question and one comment.
    Q. Why are you trying to realign the mount with SS6P? StarSense Camera is no longer needed or used during scope operation after alignment.
    C. It might help if you delete SS6P from your device, including all data, rebooting the device and doing a clean reinstall.

From being on the forum I’ve seen this same issue concerning aligning the scope with StarSense using SS6P.

Hmmm.. Steven... If you actually read my post whole and thoroughly you wouldn't ask this question.

I didn't try to realign the scope since I never had successful alignment.  SkySafari 6 Pro failed running from tablet and SkySafari 6 Plus failed running from my cell.

You may seen a lot but you are way of the topic here.

Basically, this is a "me too" post regarding this issue.

Setup: Celestron Evolution 8 with add on StarSense, Samsung Galaxy S7 and SkySafari 6 Plus.

Everything working fine a month or so ago. Went out on July 27, 2019 and all the same stuff happened as original poster Fanaticws.

    PART A:

    0 of 3 Alinged StarSense Auto Alignment; Moving to alignment position; StarSense Capturing Image; Starense Processing Image; StarSense Found 100 Stars Solving Plate; 1 of 3 Aligned StarSense Solved Plate!;

This is where it goes wrong....

    PART B:

1 of 3 Aligned StarSense Moving to alignment position; StarSense Capturing Image; StarSense Processing Image; Starsense Found 100 Stars Solving Plate; 1 of 3 Plates Aligned StarSense Error Could not plate-solve the image. Will retry at new position.

PART B repeats over and over and over until you can't take it any longer and cancel.

I started to take this up with Celestron Support (#TND-122-39995) and will share my new details with them, but I expect they will conclude it is not a hardware/firmware issue. After last night's troubleshooting, I googled the issue and quickly found this thread.

I documented the above last night so I could share the details. Last night I was able to do a manual 3 star align with the original hand control, I was able to do a manual 3 star align through wi-fi and the SkySafari 6 Plus, and a Starsense auto alignment with the StarSense hand control. This seems to eliminate any hardware/firmware issues with wi-fi mount, StarSense camera and Samsung phone. The remaining variable seems to be SkySafari's inability to function with a Starsense AutoAlign.

I did not purchase any Apollo 11 update or make any changes to SkySafari. However, I distinctly recall giving permission to a SkySafari 6 update that queued up on my phone sometime between my last successful use of SkySfari with StarSense and the July 27, 2019 beginning of failures. I clearly remember the update because I ironically thought at the time; "great, they're fixing something that isn't broken, I hope it still works."

I respectfully ask that Simulation Curriculum take this issue seriously and work towards a resolution.

Thanks everyone for your reports, and your patience.  We will review this issue and discuss with Celestron over the next couple of days.

I tested my theory the culprit is Apollo 11 Mission patch and I was wrong. Even without Apollo patch not installed the same error is still happening during the aligning. I faintly remember another update was applied in during the same period of time as Michael Tomich stated above. So that must be it. Hopefully Simulation Curriculum will take a serious look in to this issue.

    Keiron,

I don't know if this will help, but I'm NOT experiencing this problem.  Here's my configuration and alignment sequence:

Celestron CPC-1100 Deluxe in Alt/Az mode
SS (very latest firmware ver. SS HC ver. 01.20.19207, Bld. July 26, 2019)
    SS Auto-Align using SS HC
Auto-Align completed every time I tried (probably 4 times between Thursday and Saturday night)
After alignment, connected SkyBT to RS-232 connection at bottom of old SS HC
Launched SkySafari-6 Pro Android on Samsung Tablet
    Connected SkySafari-6 Pro to SkyBT

After the Bluetooth connection I probably did 50 GOTO's each night (was at a big star-party).

No problems.  I hope this helps narrow down the problem.

How to Save and Send a Log File on Android:

Settings > Scope Setup > Save Log File

Save Log File - If turned on, SkySafari saves a log of its communication with the telescope on your mobile device. SkySafari creates a new log file every time you connect to the telescope. The log file records every command that SkySafari sends to the telescope, and every response from the telescope. The log file name contains the date and time you began the telescope session, for example:

    2014-01-31-12-34-56.txt

This log file can be emailed to ksmith@simcur.com for troubleshooting telescope communication problems. You can transfer the telescope communication log from your Android device using SD file card transfer.

    • Android users - the scope communication log is written to a folder named "SkySafari Plus" or "SkySafari Pro" at the top level of your SD card. Copy this file to your computer with a USB cable, or simply email it to yourself.

Didn't have "Save to Log File" turned on. Lucky me, I get to do this again. I'll share when I get it.

I have sent you a log file from my tonight session - unsuccessful alignment with SkySafari 6 Pro.

For comparing I run another alignment this time with my old SkySafari 5 Pro... no problem aligned successfully.

If you wish I can sent you log from that session as well.

Similar issue for my scope. Celestron NexStar Evolution running Starsense. Haven't been able to try for a few nights now due to clouds in the PNW but everything worked perfectly until a week or two ago when the first plate would usually resolves but all other attempts fail with the message "Could not resolve plate. Will try another location" even after finding 90 or 100 stars. Finally at the suggestion of a member in another forum I tried SkyPortal (ver. 3.1.0.9069) as I don't have SkySafari 5 Pro and it resolved the plate ok and aligned.

This is running SkySafari Pro V 6.3.2.46 on an Android Device (Note 9 Model # SM-N960U running Android 9), but unfortunately I can't get a log file due to being in the middle of an RMA with Celestron for another issue on my mount.

When the mount comes back and I've got clear skies I'll try again and capture a log file if the issue is persisting. Thanks!

Up until this week, I've only been able to try SS alignments with my CPC-1100 Deluxe and Android (Samsung) tablet and phone.  And as I posted a couple of weeks ago, haven't had any problems.  But I just bought an Evolution mount this week, so now I have an exact equipment match to some of the people reporting this problem.  So far I've only aligned using the SS HC, and then connected my Samsung Galaxy S8 phone running SkySafari-6 Pro to the mount after the SS alignment.  Once I got all the settings in both SkySafari-6 Pro and inside the mount right, that works fine.  The SS HC did four flawless SS Auto-Alignments the first night.  Not a single fail.

Next I tried doing the SS alignment through the phone instead of through the SS HC (Align + Connect).  The first plate-solve failed, but the second one solved and it went back to get the first one again.  And then I looked up and realized the sky was gone.

So I haven't been able to fully replicate some of the problems related here.  But it's looking like I just plain don't have this problem with my very very similar system.  As soon as I get clear sky again, I'll do everything through my phone (Align + Connect) and see what happens.  And I'll report back here -- whether I have a problem or not.

Based on NOAA's current forecasts, it might not be until Tuesday I have clear sky again.

OK, now I can reproduce the problem too.  Tonight I was using a Celestron Evolution mount (Alt/Az) and was controlling it with a Samsung Galaxy S8 running SkySafari-6 Pro via WiFi.

When I do a SS Auto-Alignment through the SS HC, everything works just fine.  But when I use SkySafari-6 Pro running on my Android phone and tap "Connect and Align", the first alignment solves.  But that's it.  I never get the 2nd or 3rd alignment to solve.  The SS camera gets 100 stars, but plate solving fails every time.

This appears to be a bug when using SkySafari to do the SS Auto-Align instead of the HC.  If I align with the SS HC, and then tap "Connect" (instead of "Connect and Align", SkySafari works fine and GOTO's work fine.

When I tried to align using my phone instead of the SS HC, the SS HC was still plugged into the mount.  Is that a potential problem?  Should the SS HC be unplugged when using SkySafari?

I did turn the log file feature ON, but I don't think you need it.  You should have plenty of log files by now.

Good evening all, tried again tonight and no joy. Attempted StarSense Auto Align from my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4  running Android 9 as well as manual align and no ability to plate solve after the first plate. Tried a hand-control only Star Sense alignment and it worked like a charm. I've manually submitted log files via email as requested, hopefully these help you guys trouble-shoot. You've got the best software by a mile, if we can get alignments done again that would be great. I know the rest of the setup seems great as I just got the mount back from the factory for warranty service, so the mount seems good.

Keiron Smith, thank you for working on this, I just joined this forum to report the same error. I am using CGEMii mount with StarSense, and SS 6 Pro on Android, and like everyone one else, 1st plate solve works, and all others after fail. I was getting ready to return the WIFI module, but I will be patient and wait for a fix.

I upgraded to SkySafari 6 Pro from version 4 specifically because it was compatible with Celestron's StarSense auto alignment process and Sky Portal was laggy but have yet to use it for this purpose as I continue to encounter this issue. I look forward to a fix or at least a status update. Thanks.

It is really difficult to understand that fixing this issue could last so long, specially considering that the sister app SkyPortal "Powered by SkySafari" works with no problem.

    Hi Jose,

I checked this afternoon regarding the update.  At Celestron, a baby was born recently.  So, we all have to be patient.  I'm sure they will release the update as soon as possible.  Sometimes, life get in the way.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Any further updates? Definitely miss having the functionality of the full app, when combined with Star Sense it's amazing but right now still waiting to hear if this was addressed?
