How To Turn Off SkySafari 6 Planet Risings Notifications On Android 4.4.2? (Answer: Read On)

I have both Planet Risings and Bright Satellites and Flares notifications turned off, but I still get notifications for Moon and Planets Risings.

I can't seem to disable those.

I'll try setting Do Not Disturb for 24 hours.

The notifications aren't very useful as they are many hours late.

For example.  Moon notification at 9:50pm when it rose at 9:01am.  Jupiter Rising notification at 9:55pm when it rose at 4:25pm.

Right now we only have notifications about

    1. Planet risings
    2. Passes of three satellites (ISS, HST and Tiangong)
    3. Iridium flares

You can enable/disable the planet risings as a group and the satellite notifications as a group at the bottom of the Appearance & Behavior settings. You can also set a Do Not Disturb period for both.

    1. Tap the Settings button in the toolbar.

    2. Tap the Appearance & Behavior entry

    3. Scroll to the bottom of that page, there is a section on Notifications.

Android has really screwed up notifications.  They have made it so it is basically impossible to have notifications fire at a specific time.  In the interest of saving the battery when the device is sleeping, they queue up notifications and have them all fire within certain windows.  It is not possible to have them fire at specific times.  There are lots of complaints in the developer forums about this.

    Thanks!

While Android might have changed how notifications fire, some apps are still doing it as they always have. For example, the trivia app HQ triggers a notification every day at 750pm about their 8pm game starting with a clue to one of the questions. As for the latest version of sky safari, I NEVER get notifications until I open my app, then I get 50 or however many should have fired since the last time I opened it. Is there really nothing that can be done?

I'm sure Bill would have found a solution for this if it was possible.  Maybe it is easier if the notification is set to fire at the same time everyday?  However, I will ask the developers to again review the issue in case there have been recent developments regarding this on Android.

    Thanks, Chris, for your feedback!

This is marked as answered but this certainly hasn't been fixed. Other apps continuing to work and fire notifications appropriately, nothing from Sky Safari until I open the app and get bombarded with notifications. I guess I'll turn this feature off and miss running outside to show my neighbors bright satellites passing overhead and the cool app that notified me.

As a short aside, notifications probably only make sense for current location, even if my location is set somewhere else. I can't see why I'd ever need notified of a satellite passing overhead somewhere where I'm not. Just a thought.

    Hi Chris,

This post was about how to turn off planet rising notifications.  Is the issue to which you are referring?  If not, I believe there is a community post specific to Android notification timing issues.

    Thanks!

Sorry, I just didn't want the issue to get ignored because the thread is marked answered. While the original question is answered, your original answer incorrectly stated it's impossible to fire notifications on time, which was what I was following up on. I haven't seen another thread that we can move this conversation to but I'll check and create one if needed.
