Can I Align First With Celestron's CPWI Software (Windows PC) And Then Connect Via Celestron WiFi And SkySafari 6 Pro? (Answer: No, Read On!)

I have my Celestron AVX 8" SCT in the home (index) position and polar aligned. When I connect SF6 to the Celestron WiFi, the app has the scope pointing below the horizon. If I select Polaris, and ask SF6 to "Align" with the selected object, I receive an error that the scope's position is too far from the selected target to slew.

Is there any way to reset the scope's position in SF6 to match the scope's real position?

Me again ... I forgot to mention that I use the Celestron PWI software to align the mount before I connect SF6. I do not use the AVX hand controller at all.

After reading a few more posts in this section, I am guessing that for SF6 to work, I must do the alignment with SF6 instead. I can do that, but the main reason I like CPWI is that it can store an alignment set for recall from night-to-night (My scope is on a pier and does not move from day-to-day). At the end of each session I use CPWI to "park" the scope back in its home position pointing at the North celestial pole.

So, If I have to use SF6 to align first, then switch back to using CPWI, will SF6 remember its "home" position?

    Hi Richard,

I am not aware that this configuration is supported by Celestron.  As far as I know, using Celestron WiFi you MUST star-align using either SkySafari (or Celestron's SkyPortal app).  You can not align with PWI and then switch to SkySafari.

If you think your configuration is supported please contact Celestron support for assistance and update this post with whatever you learn from them.

    Thanks!

    Hi Keiron,

Thanks for the quick reply ...

I guess I was not 100% clear on setup ... I connect my laptop to the mount via a USB cable that connects to the hand controller. This is how CPWI connects to the mount. Then I connect my iPhone/iPad to the Celestron Wi-Fi and launch SkySafari 6. My intent was to get the best of both worlds ...

    • Use the more complex and saved pointing models in CPWI (I have models for each observation site with 6-8 alignment stars)
    • Use of the SkySafari telescope control buttons to make the fine adjustments during alignment
    • Using SF6 during my observation session to jump from target to target

Having the iPhone in may hand and using SF6 is much easier than running back and forth from the scope to the laptop (even if it is only 3 feet away).

This worked great at first, but somehow SF6 has lost track of my "Home" position on the celestial pole and thinks it is now somewhere below the horizon.

My plan for the next clear night is to use SF6 to do an alignment and then save my "home" position again in SF6. Do you think it will remember for all future sessions?

    Hi Richard,

You are welcome to experiment but I just don't think it will work properly like this.  I am quite sure if you want to use Celestron WiFi you need to create the alignment model with Celestron WiFi.  That is how the Celestron WiFi was developed.
