Why Do I Have To "Update Minor Body Orbit Data" In Order To Find C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) Every Time I Open SkySafari 6 Plus?

Hello,

I have been trying to locate C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE), but after an hour of searching online why I couldn't find it in the database, someone mentioned to "Update Minor Body Orbit Data". 

Once I click this, it comes up. However, literally every single time I open the app, I need to click this button again just to be able to find this comet. It is getting extremely annoying.

Can someone explain why it is that I need to "update" every single time I open the app to see this one particular comet? (and I'm sure many others)?

It is SkySafari 6 Plus on iOS and the most recent version.

    Hi Micah, 

    1. What version of iOS are you running?
    2. What version of SS6 Plus?  Look in Help > Scroll to the bottom
    3. When you reopen the app, if you look in Search > Brightest Comets > Is NeoWise not top of list?
    4. How much storage space is available on your device.

    Thank you very much for the quick reply. 

    I cleared up more memory on my phone, and although it isn't perfect just yet (the comet hasn't shown up once or twice) - it seems to have mostly solved the issue. (Previously I had about a gigabyte free). My natural assumption was if there is enough memory to download/update the minor orbit data, that it should stay locally on the storage.

    That said, here is the info:

    iPhone 8

    iOS 13.5.1

    SS6 Plus Ver 6.7.2.4

    ****

    NEOWISE is now showing at the top of the list of "Brightest Comets" - but if I see it disappear again, I will update.

    Same problem here, IOS version 13.5.1  on iphone 11,  Sky Safari 6 Pro version 6.7.2.4. Comet is not shown in brightest comets. I tried updating minor bodies but it doesn’t work, return 0 bytes , 0 objects every time I try it. There is plenty of memory space on my iPhone (31GB left).

    I had the same problem on my iPad Pro but updating minor bodies was successfull and I can now see neowise 2020, but the same procedure on iPhone doesn’t work.

    I have also got “return 0 bytes , 0 objects” a couple of times, but I am fairly sure it is caused by network errors. When I have reset my router, or walked closer to minimize transmission errors, I have always been able to download the full set.

    Regarding “return 0 bytes , 0 objects” - if you are using a data connection please trying using WiFi and vice versa.

    Also, another user reported success after repeatedly trying to update Minor Orbit Data; i.e. on the 3rd attempt the data downloaded.

    So, as Steen has suggested, this may be a network connectivity issue.

    As for disappearing comets, we store the updated orbit data in a "caches" directory. In theory iOS can delete anything there if it needs disk space.  So, please make sure you have MORE space than whatever you currently have, regardless of how much you presently have, or think you require - please just make more space.
