Custom Installation Fails

Hi,

Numerous issues experienced with SNPP8 today!

First tried to update v8.0.6.1978 to v8.1.0.2050 using programs internal updater but this failed with an error about a thumbs.db file having been changed (?) - to my knowledge I hadn't but thought I'd just download latest version of installer and do a clean reinstall which is when I hit the second issue..

Trying to install any of the 'Custom' installation options (Panoramas/Planet Images/All-Sky) to disk failed with 'Setup wizard ended prematurely because of error' message and installation rolled back.  Okay I don't NEED to install all these locally so reinstalled this time with a 'Typical' install which installed without an issue.  I cannot see any way to install any of these custom options from within Starry Night if I wanted to so tried the modify option in the installer again with the same result, the optional/custom features wouldn't install with same 'prematurely ended' message. *

So question is why does it fail and is there any workaround (like the data download tool which v7 had)?  O/S is Windows 10 2004 Build 19041.572.

Any help would be appreciated.

*Added: I tried Modify installation route again and this time a more specific error was reported:  "Starry Night | Extraction Error: Can not load 7-zip library or internal COM error! Message can not change the library path because the file "C:\Users\Jason\AppData\Local\Temp\7z.dll" does not exist."

    Hello Jsessions,

Regarding the update issue you ran into regarding the thumbs.db file having changed -

This file is automatically created by Windows 10 to cache thumbnail images of files you have viewed.  There are numerous articles on how to prevent this file from being created but it might result in slower display times for Windows Explorer as it makes a new temporary set of thumbnails each time.  On our side I will see if we can eliminate the thumbs.db file from our "calculus" when applying a patch.

I did a fresh custom install on my Windows 10 machine selecting to put all the data files to disk and it worked without a problem.  Usually if you run into a failure where the wizard ends prematurely it is due to a file possibly not being completely downloaded.  This can happen sometimes particularly where the internet service is slow or spotty.  If you know how to turn on the Windows installer logging you might open a ticket with us and send us copies of the latest msixxxx.log files and we can take a look.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks for your reply.

I'll look into enabling windows installer logging.  Internet speed is very unlikely to be the issue as we have decent (100Mbps+) speed and installation has been tried on on several occasions.
