[UX Issue] How To Exit From Settings > Save And Restore > Saved Settings > Preview Settings (Answer: Use Android Back Button)

Go into Settings. Go into Save and Restore Settings. In Saved Settings, choose one. Select Preview Settings. On the iPad it comes up with a screen with a title bar of the Settings in use and a Done to the right side of the title bar so that you can exit the screen back to the prior Saved Settings menu. On my Android tablet it comes up with a screen I cannot exit, as shown below. The only way out is to completely shut down and exit the app. Yes, I have tried restarting the Tablet, the app, and deleting / reinstalling without success.

Just playing around. I was trying to recreate the night mode red screen issue with keyboard partially inaccessible when  I came across this one. I was trying to get a keyboard up to save a Settings file under a new name. I never got that far...

In the bottom left corner there is a button of some kind.  Did you tap it?

That button is not visible on the screen; it shows only in the screen capture on the S7+. I have pressed there trying to see if it is actually there, but invisible, but absolutely nothing happens. I'll take another pic of the screen from my phone and attach it in a few moments…done. Nothing to press on that does anything other than the zoom icons on the bottom right. No way out other than to switch away from app. Returning to it leaves me in the same place. Only way to exit is by completely closing the app and restarting.

Not a major issue in my mind. Could be entirely Android O/S related and nothing to do with SkySafari. Danged if I know. I am still learning how to (ab)use this device, my first Droid ever.

    Rick,

Can you not tap the Android 'back" button?

    Thanks!

Please point out what button that would be on the pic of the screen in the above picture.

Ok, if I force the gesture buttons to be displayed on the screen as shown in this picture (sorry about the rotation), I can use the back button to return to the settings screen from the ‘Preview Settings’. If this is not on screen, I can not swipe from either side to get at the ‘back’ button. I can swipe up from the bottom to move focus away from the app or swipe and hold to go to the loaded app selection table, but that still leaves SS6 in a state where it is waiting for a ‘back’ input when it once again brought in focus. Something to do with Android O/S I am suspecting. I will keep trying different swipe setups in settings to see what else works or doesn’t work.

More testing and it would appear that this is quite likely an issue with my tablet but I cannot get side swiping to be consistent. Could be something to do with the case I have on it. When I can actually ‘get’ at the ‘back button, exiting the preview works. The right side of my case is almost completely open, while the left is almost completely enclosed. The active screen area is not touched at all in any manner I can see, but if I remove the tablet from the case, then this issue entirely disappears. Very sorry for all this. I have to look at what might be going on.

Hi Keiron,  I have played around with the tablet in and out of its protective case. It seems to not have any issues out of the case but is somehow being affected when mounted in the case. The left hand side is completely ‘enclosed’ within the case as well as about a cm around the corners at the top and bottom. The right hand side, top and bottom are fully open except for a 1cm long clasp at the top and bottom corner. It doesn’t look like it should be an issue but it must be slightly warping the tablet just enough to flex the long sides but not enough to cause any problems for the shorter length of the top and bottom. I am going to try to use a heat gun on the corners to warm the plastic grip tabs with the tablet out of the case, then put the tablet back in. Hopefully that will provide enough stress relief to allow screen swiping to work properly. Once again sorry for raising this issue, thanks for the feedback and have a great Christmas!

Use of a heat gun to warm the plastic corner grips/clasps helped for a while but was still inconsistent and the tablet was starting to return to prior poor behaviours when sliding from the right side. I pulled the tablet from the case and used a Dremel with grinder to cut away a very small amount plastic in the center underside of the case corners. This has worked perfectly. The tablet is still well gripped by the corner grips but enough stress has been relieved (at least at room temperatures so far) that the side slide to get at the Android ‘back’ button is consistent and the tablet seems to be held in the protective case properly without falling out.

Thanks Keiron. And I now have a ‘back’ button for use on the tablet all the time. If it had not been for your suggestion to use it, I would not have tried to figure out why I could not find or use it, and would still be using whatever means necessary to get around the lack of having access to it. It has made the S7+ tablet far easier to work with in general. Bonus! Have a great Christmas should you be inclined to celebrate such!
