How do I prevent SkySafari 6 pro from failing to load my Observing Lists and resetting edited Observing Lists?

Dear Sir or Madam, I encountered several issues related with Observing Lists using SkySafari 6 pro. Issue number 1.) occurred both with the current version of SkySafari (6.7.2.0) and the one before that, the other ones happened recently using the current version of SkySafari. I use Android 9 on my mobile phone. I created 25 Observing Lists containing a total of 44,000 objects (some objects are part of more than one Observing List, so the number of objects involved is smaller). This might have enhanced some of the issues. 1.) Three or four months ago, when I opened SkySafari, only about two thirds of my Observing Lists showed up. Waiting a few minutes did not help, neither did closing and restarting SkySafari several times. I eventually downloaded the missing Observing Lists using LiveSky. In the following months until now this issue has occurred at least ten times. Some Observing Lists appear to be affected more frequent than others. Every time I start SkySafari, there are ten seconds where I can use it before it freezes for about half a minute. Then everything is fine. If I open the Observing Lists, Observations or Sessions overview during those first few seconds, none or only few of them show up. Opening the Observing Lists overview immediately after starting SkySafari might lead to the problem described above. 2.) Last week on Wednesday or Thursday this issue occurred again. When I downloaded the missing Observing Lists using LiveSky I noticed that there were two versions of one of the Lists. One contained 4600 objects (the original number) the other one about 3500. After downloading the larger Observing List, SkySafari freezed. A few minutes later I closed SkySafari. Upon restarting of the app, there were three additional Observing List instead of the one I downloaded. One contained the first 400 objects, the other ones 3500 each (I don't know if these were the same as in the smaller Observing List included in LiveSky). I deleted and downloaded them again a few times but the results were the same. The Observing Lists lacked objects in the middle of the Observing List, not at the end. 3.) Then I decided to add the missing objects using a new Observing List, created from the same search criteria I used for the original Observing List. After I've been halfway through this task, closed SkySafari and opened it again later, the downloaded Observing List had been reset to its initial size of 3500 objects. I tried adding objects again with the same results. 4.) On Saturday I edited the Observing List created from the search results, so that it is the same as the original Observing List I downloaded, but including the missing objects. When I closed the app and started it again later, SkySafari was extremely slow. It took at least two minutes until it stopped freezing, but even then, trying to move the sky chart, there where jumps in position every ten seconds and no movement in between. Moreover, my settings have been reset. Time, Location (my user defined Observing Sites were still available), Appearance and Behavior, Horizon and Sky, Solar System and Scope Display (the field of view indicators still existed) were affected. Every five minutes SkySafari crashed and closed itself. After a couple of forced restarts I managed to open the Observing Lists overview and saw that there were six additional Observing Lists. These were the three Observing Lists described in 2.) times two. Without Internet, I was able to delete those Observing Lists and SkySafari was back to normal. Almost. 5.) On Sunday (6th of September) I realised that the new Observing List described in 4.) had been set back. I began deleting objects but after a minute or two, SkySafari crashed again. Afterwards it contained the objects I had deleted before. I tried again a few times with the same results. Luckily, the other Observing Lists work properly. The issues described above are very time consuming, so I hope to avoid them in future. Still, I plan to add additional, large Observing Lists. If these cause the problems, they are likely to occur again, especially number 1.) which already happens for a long time. What can I do to prevent them from occurring again? Is there anything you can do about it? Yours Sincerely Christoph Greschitz

    Edit:
Today, I tried to create a new Observing List using 'Planner'. A couple of seconds after I typed at 'Make into Observing List', SkySafari closed itself. When I restarted it, there was a new Observing List with 400 objects instead of 4600. Experimenting with different search criteria, this happened evertime I tried to make more than 400 objects into an Observing List.

Could uninstalling and reinstalling help? I haven't done it so far, for fear something might go wrong.

    Christoph,

Observing lists with 4600 objects is not a practical use case.  400 is the maximum.

    Thanks!

    Keiron,

So far it was possible to make up to 10,000 objects in an Observing List without any problems, but something has changed.
I don't know how I am supposed to work with Observing Lists with only 400 objects. These Observing Lists are the result from highlighting the observable objects in one constellation. Further splits would be highly impractical.

400 seems low to me as a limit. I have three observing lists currently over 400, although I agree that many thousands is probably unreasonable.

    Chris,
The vast majority of objects I currently observe range from 13th to high 16th Magnitude. Having them in a Observing List allows me to see which galaxies are observable and which are not. I preview them at home to remove objects that are to faint and note if and where there are faint foreground stars that could be confused with the galaxy. Moreover, galaxies I have already seen are not highlighted.

Until yesterday it was possible to make more than 400 objects into an Observing List but apparently something changed.

    Edit:
Today, I de- and reinstalled SkySafari. After logging in on LiveSky all Observing Lists were downloaded automatically. I got a slight shock, since only the first 400 objects of each Observing List were available, but it was possible to download those Observing Lists one by one from LiveSky. The downside is that the uncomlete Observing Lists with 400 objects get inserted every time SkySafari synchronises.

My Observations and Sessions are still missing, and I hope that they will eventually appear automatically. I really don't feel like downloading 2,000 Observations and 150 Sessions manually.

Anyways, the good news is that I can now create Observing Lists with up to 10,000 objects!
I guess you can mark this Question/Problem as answered, although it is still unclear to me what exactly caused my issues.

Four days passed by and my observations are still missing.

I tried waiting for up to an hour with Sky safari activated, stopping and starting the app, starting with and without Internet, restarting my device, checking off "Backup My Data To Cloud Storage", not checking it off, and I started the app a few times a day until now but to no avail.

Looking at LiveSky, my observations still show up, as do the sessions, but it won't synchronise. Is there any chance that they will turn up in a few days? Should I de- and reinstall SkySafari? Yesterday I already added a new Observation, hoping it won't overwrite the other observations, but so far, nothing happened to the LiveSky Data. LiveSky doesn't offer an option to download Observations into SkySafari, so this is out of Question too.

    PS,
in my initial post, I mentioned that I need to wait some time, before SkySafari stops freezing. This time is cut in half, so apparently my observations played a role in increasing this time too.

    Keiron:  Regarding your comment:

    "Christoph,

    Thanks!"

The 400 maximum limit is WAY too limited.   Multiple highly used & downloaded lists, eg The Orion Deep Map 600 DSOs, Pensack 500, DeepMap 600 Double Stars, etc.  all have over 400 objects.  With the 400 limit there is now no way (unless painstakingly manually) to, for example, quickly download and combine Messier, Caldwell, Deep Map 600 DSOs and Best Double Stars into what would be a very reasonable "all best objects" observing list and upload it.  A few months ago, lists over 400 were not a problem, now they are.  If you need more server space, fine, say with "Premium" you get larger lists, and I would pay for that.  Limiting lists to 400 make SkySafari and LiveSky much less useful.

Note: I feel fortunate that I created my "Top 1000" lists prior to you implementing this new rule.

    Thank You Jeff!
Apparently the 400 limit is only an issue if you deinstall SS6 but you can still create large lists and download them manually. What remains after de-and reinstallation are undeletable Observing Lists with 400 objects and no observations at all.

    Hello Everyone,

Let me shed some light on this topic. We are currently going through the Observing List functionality and making improvements and optimizations.

Technically, Observing Lists do not have an upper limit but working with lists with over 400 objects is not optimized and will take noticeably longer when loading, exporting, etc. We recognize that larger lists are important to our users and are working to make this process much more efficient. Updates are actively being developed and will be coming soon.

Thanks Kyle for that comment.  I am very appreciative of all SkySafari and Live Sky have done for our hobby.  All was great until just recently, when Live Sky would only display (and download/email) 400 objects from our observing lists.  Please correct soonest!  Thanks!!

I will add that re: "working with lists with over 400 objects is not optimized and will take noticeably longer when loading, exporting, etc."  I have been waiting for tens of minutes on Live Sky, list is never going over 400.
