Beta Testing SkySafari 7 (iOS Only) - Read This To Participate!

Invitation to iOS Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Apple iOS device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 7!

How to Apply:

Please reply here (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.  Please do not post requests to join the SS7 beta in other forums, as they will not be accepted.  If you're reading this you can reply here.

When you are officially invited to participate you will see and have access to the SN7 Beta Testing forum.  The SS7 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are invited to participate.  When you are accepted, you will be notified via a TestFlight email and then you will be able to both view the SS7 beta forum and download the SS7 beta app.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS7 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 7 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS7 Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS7 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS7 Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 7 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS7 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS7 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

TestFlight:

In order to participate you will need to have TestFlight installed on your iOS device(s).  You can download and install TestFlight from this link here:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/testflight/id899247664?mt=8

  4. FOLLOW the main SS7 beta forum to be kept up-to-date of any new posts (bug reports) and discussions thereafter (you get email updates).
  5. REVIEW previous beta testing discussions before posting your bug report.
  6. COMMENT on bugs already reported.
  7. Create NEW posts for bugs not yet reported.
  8. Follow the bug reporting GUIDELINES when reporting or commenting on bugs.
  9. Do NOT reply/comment to email updates.  Instead, VIEW the post first, then comment.
  10. Post any questions, about anything to do with the beta testing, in the beta forum.  We will reply to you there.

Maybe I’m missing something. I downloaded TestFlight, but I need a code from you to use it. Also, how/where do I download SF7?

The same thing happened to me. But I went back to the link in the email and when I clicked on it again, it opened TestFlight and allowed me to install SS7.

August, that worked for me, too. I’m visiting my mom, who doesn’t have any Internet. I am unable to download a big app until I get home in a few days.

I had no problem downloading SS7 Plus onto iPhone 11 Pro Max, using the code you sent for Test Flight.  It is very different from SS6 Pro, which is what I was using.  I’m not sure how many of these changes are a difference between the "Plus" version and the "Pro" version.  There are only five icons in the menu on the bottom of the screen.  I finally figured out how to center an object by long-pressing the object, and selecting the two little arrows facing each other.  (Unfortunately, selecting "Help" takes you to help with SS6.). I also found the information about the object by selecting the little "I" next to the object name.  This is much easier than getting to the information screen on SS6.  Thanks for this improvement!.  Actually, when I clicked on "i" to see the Moon information it crashed the first time, but I opened SS7 again and it works fine now.  I’m still searching for one of my favorite features of SS, which is measuring the distance between two objects.  I loved the SS5 way which was selecting an object, and then double tapping the second object.  This revealed the angular distance between the two.  Anyone know how we find this feature now?

    Maureen Salmi,

We appreciate your feedback, but this is not the correct place to post feedback, bugs, etc.

Per the instructions above, please create a NEW post for any bugs/issues/feedback in the SS7 Beta Testing forum here:

Crash report: If I click on the "Tonight" icon on the menu at the bottom of the screen, it offers two items in blue under "Calendar ".  The two items are Third Quarter Moon and Andromeda Galaxy.  If I select either of these items it will center the item in sky view, but the app crashes if I try to zoom in or I click on the little "I" to see the information.  If I open the app and search for the item myself, I can zoom in and see the information without any problem.  The crash only occurs if I go through "Tonight" and "Calendar". This problem does not occur if I chose an item from "Events", "Solar System, or "Deep Sky".   I am using an iPhone 11 Pro Max with software version 14.8 and I have over 100 GB available.

Hi Maureen, i probably should post a reply here but, yes, you are correct that we don't have a method to bring up the measure tool at the moment.  The plan is to make the selection menu (the one that comes up when you tap and hold an object) to be configurable - so you can select the graph tool, or the measure tool etc to be one of the 5 icons.  Not sure if we can pull it off for the initial 7.0 release, but it will be there shortly after in 7.1.  But let's see if we can squeeze it in.  Thank you. Your crash report has been logged - see existing discussion - https://support.simulationcurriculum.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/4409633050007--Bug-Tonight-At-A-Glance-Crasher

I’d love to take a look at SS7. I’ve been using SS6 on both an iPhone 8+ and an iPad Pro. I have an Orion 14” DOB with SynScan Wi-Fi go-to adapter. Thank you!

I’d certainly be interested in helping out with testing SS7.  I’ve been a user of SkySafari Pro versions since SS4 in 2015 - then have enjoyed its development through SS5 and SS6.  Having reported issues to the Support Team in the past, responses I’ve received have mentioned future SS7 offering useful fixes; I have been waiting for this new version to arrive.

I don’t have the benefit of a computerised scope, but instead enjoy my Celestron Ultima 8 PEC when home, and an 82mm Leica APO Televid when travelling.  My binoculars are also well used for wide-field - two eyes are often better than one.

One question… will SS7 beta safely coexist with SS6 on the same device, or should we be considering dedicating a separate device and/or LiveSky account for testing purposes?

Hi i’ve been using skysafari for i think about a decade on numerous devices and it is still my favourite astronomy app. I use skysafari with kstars/stellarmate to control my neq6 pro but i have to admit it doesnt work often enough so i look forward to whatever improvements follow.

    Hi Keiron,

Hope I'm not too late to join the SkySafari 7 Beta Team!

I'm coordinating the volunteers at Sterrenwacht Presikheaven, a public observatory in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

I'm a daily user since SkySafari 5, now using 6 Pro on the iPad Air 2, and 6 Plus on Android. I'm using it at the star parties we organise, as well as connected to my iOptron CEM25p mount with SkyFi and to a Celestron CGX mount with Skyportal wifi. On public meetings we demonstrate SkySafari on a smartboard to the public: the free version for casual users and the paid versions to more enthusiastic observers. Virtually all our volunteers use SkySafari!

    Cheerfully yours,

    Floris-Jan

Count me in, I have been a user of SS6 Pro, I have celestron CGX with C11 and do visual with Skyportal wifi adapter and AP with ASI setup. And I also have a Skywatcher EQ6R Pro with Synscan wifi adapter and ASI for AP.  I’m 25 year IT experience in software development, I’m testing right now for Celestron beta and for ASIair Plus pre-release hardware and I my most recent contribution to testing was for Skywatcher just this month where I helped them chase down a bug in their latest motor control firmware that bricks their mounts when enabling PEC.  I am very familar with beta and testing protocols, what good feedback and data collection is to support developers.

I would like to participate in the beta testing. I have an iPhone SE and an iPad Air 2, and I have the Pro version of SkySafari 6 installed on these devices. I don't use a telescope, but I regurarly plan my naked eye and binoculars sessions with SkySafari. I also use SkySafari to simulate the sky in the far future and past.

    ##### SS7 RELEASE NOTES #####

    Yesterday we released version 1014.

We are now posting a Google Sheet link that includes release notes for each build.

Everyone has "read" access to the Google Sheet link.

The release notes include what was fixed in that build.

My hobby is astrophotography and observing. I have already given feedback about SS6 pro not being able to control the skywatcher azgti mount properly after handing over to the Skywatcher pro app and explained what I believe the reasons for that. I use SS6 Pro regularly and control the azgti mount in both az and eq mode. Happy to try SSP7. I have SSP6 on iPads and iPhones.

I'd love to take part in Beta testing. I've been using SS for about 10years and it is an essential part of my set up.

I have  number of scopes I use, all are controlled from SS6 at the moment. Main scope is an 18" driven Dobsonian. I consider myself an advanced visual observer.

I am particularly interested in the Indi capability, and the Observing Tools
