Beta Testing SkySafari 7 (iOS Only) - Read This To Participate!

Invitation to iOS Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Apple iOS device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 7!

How to Apply:

Please reply here (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.  Please do not post requests to join the SS7 beta in other forums, as they will not be accepted.  If you're reading this you can reply here.

When you are officially invited to participate you will see and have access to the SN7 Beta Testing forum.  The SS7 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are invited to participate.  When you are accepted, you will be notified via a TestFlight email and then you will be able to both view the SS7 beta forum and download the SS7 beta app.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS7 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 7 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS7 Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS7 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS7 Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 7 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS7 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS7 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

TestFlight:

In order to participate you will need to have TestFlight installed on your iOS device(s).  You can download and install TestFlight from this link here:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/testflight/id899247664?mt=8

  3. When invited to join the beta testing, download and install the iOS TESTFLIGHT app.
  4. FOLLOW the main SS7 beta forum to be kept up-to-date of any new posts (bug reports) and discussions thereafter (you get email updates).
  5. REVIEW previous beta testing discussions before posting your bug report.
  6. COMMENT on bugs already reported.
  7. Create NEW posts for bugs not yet reported.
  8. Follow the bug reporting GUIDELINES when reporting or commenting on bugs.
  9. Do NOT reply/comment to email updates.  Instead, VIEW the post first, then comment.
  10. Post any questions, about anything to do with the beta testing, in the beta forum.  We will reply to you there.

Thank YOU!

We are very excited about the up and coming release of SS7 and we're looking forward to working closely with everyone involved in the beta testing.

Again, this is only for Apple iOS devices, at this time.

I would like to beta test also.

I have been using SkySafari going back to version 3. Currently I have 6+ on my iPhone 11 max as a sky map, observing list manager and telescope controller.

I currently use a skywatcher AZGTi for EAA and visual. I also have an explore scientific G-11 PMC-8 that could be involved in the testing.

I just started configuring and testing with Alpaca

    Hello Keiron!
My name is Junayet Miah. I would love to beta test SkySafari 7. I have an Iphone 12 pro max running IOS 15. I've used SkySafari 6 a ton. I would say I'm a pretty heavy user. My family and I currently have the "Celestron NexStar 8SE" telescope.

Please create NEW posts in the SS7 Beta Testing forum for any INDI issues.

We have all come a long way together.  But, still have a long way to go before official release!

Massive THANK YOUUUUUs for the all the bug reports posted so far!!

    Hi,

little late to the party. Would like to help. I have been using skysafari on my IPads IPhones and Android phones. General use but also to control my telescope mount’s, like my Astrophysics mach1 and my Skywatcher AZ-gti. Recently I have added an Astrotrac360 not supported by the app (yet?). It does however now have a brand new Indi driver. With version 7 I am hoping to be able to control the mount directly from the app if at all possible.

    Be happy to help testing.

SkySafari is the one and only app I am using since 2011. (SS-3 Pro, SS-4-Pro, SS-5-Pro, both on iPhone as on iPad).  Therefore I am very much interested in Beta testing the newest version.

My focus lies in visual astronomy with a 22-inch dobson. I don’t use setting circles, but visual pointing and starhopping.

    - Starhopping could use improvement, because starpatterns on screen do not always match the patterns in the eyepiece. (IMHO the screen shows too little difference between mag.10 and mag.14 stars)

    - better “observation” tools: better layout and -most of all- spoken word-recording.

    - better possibilities to scroll through your own observation-history.

    - Screenview rotation manually on demand  (stepless, not in 90 degree-blocks)

    - a fix for the automatic rotation  (near zenit and near Polaris this can be annoying).

    Looking forward !

    Hi!

I am an old SkySafari beta tester and received an invitation automatically. But all these weeks I can't get to this forum, since the new Safari browser does not support it. Finally I went through another browser, but I don't see the section for testers. How do I get there?

    ##### INDI & Telescope Control Feedback Request #####

First off, we would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who has been working hard, going though all the new features, and design updates, reporting bugs, and offering feedback!  We have come a LONG WAY in the last month - all because of YOU!

And, with that said, we can let you know that we are getting very close to releasing SS7 in the App Store.  So, if you have yet to take a look at the beta, or you looked but have yet to report bugs or offer feedback, now is the time!

Also, we know from your replies here that most of you are SkySafari + telescope control POWER USERS!  And, we have not received a lot of feedback regarding telescope control.  Does that mean telescope control has not been tested OR that it has been tested and no problems were found?  So, please let us know in the SS7 beta testing forum whether or not you have found success controlling your scope.  At this stage "Yes, it works" is as good as "No, it's broken"!

Also, we have introduced support for INDI but have yet to receive any significant feedback regarding whether this is or is not working properly.  So, if you are an INDI USER please test this functionality in SS7!  And, if you belong to an INDI USER GROUP please let everyone know what we are doing here, that we could use their help now.

We are also introducing support for ASCOM Alpaca, and at this time are very much indebted to Bob Denny for his tremendous troubleshooting efforts!  Thank you Bob!

    Again, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

SS7 is looking very good, we are all very excited, and fingers crossed this will be our best release ever!

    Clear skies, and stay safe!

Hello I’ve been using SSPro 6 with my push to 15 inch dob for a year now and I’m quite pleased. I would love to test out version7 and have some suggestions for further improvements

    Kieron,

I have not been able to configure using alpaca yet. So have not test tested that. I think the blocker issues have been identified and are in the works.

I have used the telescope control using alpaca scope to emulate a skyfi and have run into some issues, but I haven’t reported anything since it is a bit of a workaround.

I can certainly log them in if that would be helpful.

Iphone 11 user. Would like to beta test. Test case: DSO imager with permanent roll off roof observatory. Using an INDI RasPi servers at 2 piers controlling an HDX110 mount, iOptron CRN120, 3 Moonlite focusers, Some DIY focusers with custom firmware Indi drivers, ZWO CMOS FW, SXFW, Atik CCD. Remote control of rig normally run thru Xubuntu Kstars/Ekos. Also observatory controlled by DIY INDI hardware/software and homebuilt DC roof motor, also DIY Weather/Safety system integrated. We have used SkySafari on iOS to remote access mounts for visual, for pointing, alignments, syncs, etc. would be interested in Beta seeing it work with our equipment and to use it more both locally and is possible remotely. Hope to be included.
    Thanks,
    Jeff
