Beta Testing SkySafari 7 (Android Only) - Read EVERYTHING To Participate!

Invitation To Android Users:

Everyone here in the Community Forums (with an Android device) is invited to participate in the beta-testing cycle :)

Your beta-testing feedback, whatever you can contribute, will be invaluable to the success of SkySafari 7 for Android!

IMPORTANT: Beta Test User Requirements:

  • Email requirements: Users need a Google Account ( or a G Suite account to join in the beta test (see below).
  • Support Account requirements: Users must have Simulation Curriculum Support Account and must reply to this post; i.e. you are logged in to this website (see below).

How To Apply - 2 Parts:

    1. You must enter your @Gmail or G Suite email address (the one you use to login to Google Play to buy/download apps for your Android device) into the red bar on the bottom of this webpage.  Note, the red bar can be hidden if you have any kind of ad-blocking plugin installed.
    2. Please also reply to this post (in a comment below) if you can help us at this time.  Please outline your experience with SkySafari, including what versions of SkySafari you have run previously, what telescopes you are controlling, what kind of astronomy you are involved in, if you are a power user, etc.

Failing to follow the 2 step application process above will exclude you from the beta testing cycle.

When Accepted To Beta Test:

When you are accepted, you will be notified via an email (sent to your @Gmail/G Suite email address) that you are able to download the SS7 Android beta app from Google Play.

Accessing The SS7 Android Beta Testing Forum: When you are accepted you will see and have access to the SS7 Android Beta Testing forum.  The SS7 Beta Testing forum is hidden until you are accepted.

Please note, not all applicants will be immediately included in the beta-testing.  So, if you apply and do not hear back please be patient.

*** If accepted to the SS7 beta-testing forum please do NOT report bug/issues on this post.  See below for workflow ***

The Process:

As you find bugs/issues in SkySafari 7 please first review the current discussions in this beta-testing forum (which is hidden until you are invited).  If your bug/issue has already been identified please comment on the existing post.  If your bug/issue has not been identified please create a NEW post in the SS7 Android Beta Testing forum.

For clarity regarding this bug reporting process please see the Example Bug Report (hidden until you are officially invited)

Please do not submit tickets with bugs/issues.

How To Follow The SS7 Beta Forum:

As part of your participation we would appreciate that you follow the SS7 Android Beta Testing forum.  Following a forum means you will receive email updates when anyone creates a NEW post or comments/replies to one of the existing posts. This is important for two reasons.

  1. Following the forum ensures you receive email updates regarding all admin communications to the beta testers.  If admins make a post asking for assistance you will get an email update with that post.
  2. Following is also very important so that you have an on-going status report regarding bugs/issues identified, confirmed, requiring further testing, or have been resolved, etc.  This will help you stay on top of the overall process, and ensure you are not duplicating efforts where issues are already known and resolved.

To FOLLOW the SkySafari 7 Beta Testing community forum please see here.  Note, you must have been invited first, and have access to the forum before you can follow it.

Replying to Email Updates:

When you follow the SS7 Beta Testing forum you will receive email updates regarding new posts (and comments, if opted for).  Please do not reply to email updates using the "Reply" function.  Please first use the "View the comment" link to open the community forum post, then reply to the post.

This point is crucially important - so please understand the image below (this an example of an SS7 Beta Testing email update as seen using my web browser Yahoo email account).

If you use the email update "Reply" function your reply will not be added to the community forum discussion.

I would like to join the SS7 Beta Program.

I am just a hobbyist with a Celestron AVX mount. I have only used SS6. I use SS6 on Google Pixel 6 phone and a Samsung Chromebook Plus.

However, I am a software engineer so this may allow me to add something additional in that domain.

Minsc, Isheller, Timo, Astroisme, Andrea, Art F, Khaniev, Phi, Eric,

    Everyone is in the beta!

If you can not access the SS7 beta Google Play Store download then either you did not enter your Google Play Store Gmail email address in the red bar OR you did not enter the correct Google Play Store Gmail email address in the red bar (please read the instructions carefully).

Please see this post regarding what we need tested and how to download the beta:

[] What We Need Tested - Round 3

Please read through the titles of existing posts, so as not use your time and energy reporting bugs already reported.

Please also test scope control - in the Android Beta Testing forum please create NEW posts to outline scope connection success stories too.  In the posts please include:

    1. App and version
    2. Android OS
    3. Android device
    4. Scope + mount
    5. Connection type (i.e. Celestron WiFi, SkyFi 3, SynScan WiFi, etc)
    6. Screenshots of telescope presets
    7. Steps-by-step path to reproduce success

This will be helpful to identify which scope presets are working, which ones are not, and any steps or options that make the difference.

In the title of the post list: App + Version + Android OS + Device + Scope.

Thank YOUUUU to everyone who has contributed so far, we have a lot of excellent feedback so far!

Ashirwad here. Reporting three bugs. Tried to search in the previous discussion about bug reporting and could not find these bugs being discussed. Before I report, please note my device details :- Samsung Galaxy Tab A. Model SM-T510. Running Android 11. Kernel Version 4.4.177-22626479. Loaded successfully the SS7 version and the SS7 Pro data files.

Bug 1) I am holding Tab in Portrait position. The bug is about the incomplete display of the menu.

When I run the SS7 beta, the SS7 pro displays the star maps well. At the bottom of the screen, the menu bar is displayed. The items displayed on menu bar are Menu, Search, Selection, Time, Tonight, Observe, Scope, Night, Calendar and Letter S. The last should be Settings. It is not seen completely. Then I rotated the Tab from portrait to Landscape. This time, the bottom menu bar is displayed properly, where the last menu ..Settings, also is seen well.

Bug 2) The scope selection and display is not seen properly. I compared the user interface behaviour with respect to my old SS6 Pro. In SS6 Pro, I am able to go to a menu item "Observe", Select "scope Display" and related Eyepiece well. Then I select one of my scopes and an eyepiece. Finally I select the "Show even if not connected to Telescope". And thus, I see a nice circle which is a FoV for the sky I am observing. This is not located in the SS7 Beta. I tried hard. Maybe I missed. If it exists, it is not as intuitive as compared to SS6 Pro.

Bug 3) This bug is related to Best deep sky objects. I tapped "Search" in the menu bar below. In the search, the menu is as follows, Current satellites, Brightest Asteroids, Brightest comets.....and so on. 10th item is "Best deep sky objects". When I tapped Best deep sky objects, the list of objects is displayed. When I tap one of them, the SS7 Beta wrongly gives details of a object. To elaborate...When I tap Quasar 3C 273, the SS7 beta should display information about 3C 273. It rather gives information about the item next to 3C 273, which is 47 Tucanae. Interestingly, I see similar behaviour of SS7 Pro for other items such as Brightest Stars, Best Double stars and so on.

-Finally, I am sorry if I have used the incorrect bug reporting process. I have read the invitation page "Everything to participate", but still catching up with your software engineering process and methodology. But I am enjoying the testing and hope to catch more bugs....Ashirwad Tillu

Phi GI are you running Android OS 10, 11 or 12?  Android 10 is the minimum OS requirement.

Please contact me with your reply and if you need further assistance.

    Good morning,

I would like to be included in your beta testing of Sky Safari 7 for Android.

I have Sky Safari 6 in my Android phone (Samsung S10+ OS12).

I am waiting for the release of the latest iOptron Skyhunter for my new Starfield ED80 that I would like to control with Sky Safari.

At the moment is piggybacked to my CPC 1100 Edge HD.

I have been in astronomy for the past 11 years and at the moment only visual and some EAA.

I have participated in the past as beta tester for different software companies, and I do all the

maintenance of my company computers (some Mac, mostly Windows)

    Hi Keiron,

I entered my email address corresponding to my google account in the red bar, but  but Google Play still does not offer me the beta.

I take this opportunity to expand my user profile:

    200/800 - EQ6R- Altaïr 294c

I use my telescope in remote access on cool nights and Skysafari 6 pro for EEA evenings.

SS6 also allows me to plan my evenings.

I have been photographing the deep sky for 4 years (when the sky allows it 😅).

    I use my Eq6-r for 1 year, before I used a Dobsonian 254/1200 Goto.

if you find the reason why I can't I don't have access to the beta program, I will be happy to report the bugs of this new version.

    Thank you in beforehand

I can help with the beta.  I've been a user of Sky Safari on Android, from the very first beta.  I'm a power user, but don't control any telescopes.  I mostly do Deep Sky observing.  no photography.

I am doing translation work English to Korean. I haven't used the app and I don't have any experience of app, telescope.. My goal to join this is to see if the translations are suitable on the sections they are placed.

I have been a SkySafari user for over 3 years and love the product.  However, I have SkySafari Pro version 6 but it will no longer connect to Celestron WiFi so I decided to try beta testing SkySafari 7 so I could continue using my telescope with SkySafari.
    Android Version 12
Galaxy Tab S6 (model SM-T860) also Samsung S9 Phone.
    Celestron Nexstar 8" Evolution 8
    Celestron WiFi
I also use LiveSky as the repository from for my observations.

I currently use Skysafari 6 pro on a Tab S7 FE with Android v 11 and S22 Ultra with ver. 12. I have a Celestron Edge 8HD with a EQ6-r Pro and I connect using an ASIAIR Plus controller via WiFi. I mainly use the ASIAir Plus to control mount and SS to see what I want to look at for the night, I have used SS at the same time but it's been a while since I have.

    Hello SS7 Android Beta Testers!

As you already likely know by now we have officially released SS7 for Android, it is available in Google Play Store.

However, we still need your help, we are still releasing betas - another came out today!

[Plus & Pro both] Now Available For Testing

Please keep beta testing for the next couple of weeks, help confirm the bugs, and make sure we didn't break anything in a big way!

The official release of SS7 for Android is a momentous occasion, and the strength of the app in its current iteration is the result of YOUR passion and hard work - all the reports, troubleshooting, feedback and requests!

Thank you to EVERYONE that has participated, and take pride knowing that many tens of thousands of SS7 Android users are enjoying the app today because of the time and energy invested by you throughout the beta testing.

Again, please don't exit the beta just yet.  We will need your help.

    We have LIFT-OFF!

I have used Sky Safari 6 Plus for a few years now but definitely an amateur. An upgraded interface is an attraction to me.

I use a Samsung android smart phone for casual skygazing and photography.

    Thanks for the consideration

    Hi @Keiron Smith

A question, not directly to beta testing, rather to features of SkySafari (SS):
Is there a way somehow "remote control" SS by calling its whatever Activity from another Android application?
    Use case would be:
I have an astro photo and from my plate solver application for Android for the solved image I would like to start SkySafari by calling its target activity and passing Right Ascension and Declination coordinates plus desired FOV so SS can navigate to those coordinates and show desired sky area using desired FOV.

    Thanks and regards,
